In Malaysia alone, there are 140,000 households that rely on coastal fisheries for food and incomes.

What impact will this have on coastal communities? 🐠
Coral reefs support food security for coastal communities, as they are part of the nursery system (along with mangroves and seagrass) that produces the fish targeted by those small-scale fishers.
Why is this happening?
Mass bleaching, pollution from inadequate sewage treatment and overfishing can all contribute to coral reef loss. Live coral cover declined from about 45% in 2024 to 40% in 2025.
We lost 47,250 football fields worth of coral reefs in the last five years in Malaysia. ‼️

🫙 Zero waste systems at different scales
💨 How traditional “waste management” is expensive, and exacerbates the urgent issues of pollution, microplastics and climate change
📢 How you can become a zero waste advocate
The #plastics crisis requires systemic change — including innovative zero waste systems, strong policy, and shifts in culture.
We wanted to take a step back and break down zero waste in our new blog, read it here 🔗 www.pacificenvironment.org/zero-waste-1...
Thank you for clarifying what we do and don’t know. It’s clear that microplastics are ubiquitous — we need urgent policy action and further research. 🧐
Scientists agree that microplastics are everywhere. They're in our oceans, our food, and even in our bodies. 🌊🥗🧠
There’s no debating it. WE NEED LESS PLASTIC, MORE REAL SOLUTIONS NOW. ⚠️🚨
