Coming up next month, the ARX team finally get to give their side of the story!

Wow. I missed that one- thanks you, a well written and insightful article. Whilst I fell for RISC OS coming from Gem and then Amiga Workbench. I was dismayed to read that the RISC OS team outwitted the ARX team in terms of pure tech.
Then again, we'd be stuck with a Modula 2 implementation v asm.
Quite a bit. I chaired a panel discussion with the project lead and some of the core team:

I'm also curious to learn how much of RISC OS is inherited from the BBC Micro. There are certain legacy features like OS_WORD and OS_BYTE that seem to be copied directly, along with the original graphics mode numbering for the Archimedes.
Before: A simple indirected icon containing the filename of a file – in this case a BBC Font. It’s currently an “R2” so there’s a simple 3D border around the text. But set the type to “R92”...
Now the icon is set to Type 92 the file has been cached and is being redrawn automatically by ImageFileRender. The program doesn’t even know there is a graphic – this can be retrofitted to any program that uses Template files.
Have I shown this kind of RISC OS Custom Icon before? Type 92 is IFR – just put the filename of some renderable file in an icon and set its validation to “R92”. Hey presto, graphic file cached and displayed automatically. [see alt]

Acorn Archimedes computer with original CRT monitor. Inset photos show monitor cable put together from breakout boards connecting DB9 to VGA15 pin connectors.
Well chuffed to acquire an AKF30 (basically a CM8833) for my Archimedes. 🥹 CRT loveliness. I did have to hack together some temporary cables while I wait for a decent one from CJE. The pin layout is kinda weird on these. Thank goodness for these breakout adapters! #retrogaming

@riscosopen.bsky.social Has been fine tuning the new Wimp which is currently under testing for Dark Mode, I got access to the new Version today and does load my Dark theme very nicely Wimp 5.89 is looking good! Some tweaks will be added to !Themedefs to make theming your Desktop much easier.
Eight standard font formats defined as RISC OS filetypes that either haven’t been officially allocated; have already been allocated to something else; or are reserved for non-distribution. It’s total anarchy here aboard the Nautilus – down with The Empire!
I have so many unofficial RISC OS font filetypes. Eventually I’ll have to allocate these properly and they’ll all change and break my tools.
Plus how will I ever remember TTF and OTF if they’re not &77F and &07F? The nice thing about anarchy is that it’s very simple.
Indeed it was the ability to incorporate any other processor that led Acorn, through trying the best of what was available, to develop the ARM instead.
It's not just how this is possible, it's why it's possible to watch a video about it on the Tube.
(Do you see what I did there?!)
A photo of the latest Archive magazine. A magazine for users of the RISC OS operating system – that runs on ARM based processors and emulated systems.
Yes, I'm sorry I'm late with my obligatory photo of Archive magazine, but I've been away and only just got back¹. But it was nice to find this waiting for me.
¹ I'd have posted a day earlier if the airline hadn't delayed the flight by 24 hours.
