I looked deep into a well
saw my head floating in the sky
realising that looking down
can sometimes make us fly

spring sun lights the copse
early leaves glowing lime-green
a warbler trilling

a swollen bud aches
from the pressing glut of spring
urging for the bloom

Each nation, in its conceit,
Thinks of itself as the greatest:
A model of civilisation,
A beacon of just morality.
How can anyone truly believe this,
When we choose to settle our differences
By killing each other's children.

What if it were true That it took countless Turns of the wheel To get to this To be one of these Small-minded entities Stuck in small moments Ignorant of our ancestors' wisdom Forgetting their lessons Sucking off all the sweet flesh Leaving a dank heap Of spit pips as a bed For our children
Pinnacle?

I watched the news yesterday, more scandal, more of the things there's been way too much of. One item, I can't remember the context, the who, what, where, or why of it all. Just this picture has stuck, like some nested triptych; a painting hanging in a nondescript room, on a computer screen, watched through the indifferent lens of my TV. Not even the whole thing, a portion behind the speaker's head, framed by the screen corner: Loweryesque figures vibrantly inactive, animated by some artist's mystic hand. The unseen voice and bobbing head, a sideshow, my attention pulled to that top right corner, to dance with brightly coloured figures, on a street where all news was yesterday's.

with each malty sip, I dream

winter haunts the ground

early buds are popping to

a lone raindrop hangs
refracting the morning light

solitary gull drifting
lonely summer sky
