Trump’s new budget adds an extra $500 billion to fund wars abroad — about $3,700 more for every household in America — while cutting health, jobs, housing, and education.

Put simply, it takes more of your money for foreign wars, while making life in America even more unaffordable.

@ugaschooloflaw.bsky.social Professor @desireelc.bsky.social and student N’Guessan (Clément) Kouame published “Modern Slavery Thriving in the Shadows of West Africa: Why Coubaly v. Cargill Furthers Legal Barriers to Labor Rights Accountability” in International Labor Rights Case Law.

It was such a pleasure to co-author this piece with a great UGA Law student, N'Guessan Kouame, critiquing the most recent Alien Tort Statute (ATS) case, Coubaly v. Cargill. brill.com/view/journal...

In other words, to find adjudicatory jurisdiction, the court required that the plaintiffs, who were *children* at the time of their enslavement, procure detailed information about the supply chain that exploited their non-consensual labor.

Sit with that a minute.

Assuming that was possible, plaintiffs then had to: (1) identify all the farms where the plaintiffs had worked; (2) fully identify the farmers who owned and controlled those farms; and (3) plausibly allege that the farmers supplied cocoa to the importers or “clearly identified intermediaries.”

Dismissing the ATS claim brought by former child slaves in Cote D'Ivoire against MNCs, including Nestle & Cargill, the DC Court of Appeals held the plaintiffs to impossibly high evidentiary standards. It required that they define the venture in which the importers allegedly participated.

Int'l lawyers often discuss how states generate new procedures/norms w/ the assumption that this marks progress. The Trump administration (through tariff threats) is socializing US forced labor bans. Below, I've written why I think this marks a setback in int'l law.

Turner on Artificial Legal Agents Christian Turner (University of Georgia School of Law) has posted Artificial Legal Agents and the Alien Stance on SSRN. Here is the abstract: We find ourselves ensnared in an ever nastier and strident debate over AI and its role in law, society, and private life. Derided as mindless math or a stochastic parrot, AI is often shrugged off as just a bad tool, perhaps even the latest tech bro obsession after crypto and NFTs.

Unpopular opinion? The recent move on social media to use AI to write everyone's chats really sucks. I don't want to read a robot when I'm peer reviewing articles, and I don't want to read a robot on here or LinkedIn.

Looking forward to speaking at this panel on AI at the @universityoftexas.bsky.social School of Law for a symposium organized by the Texas International Law Journal -- where I was once an editor! I will be discussing a working paper on how anticipatory automation coerces workers under the NLRA.
