Maternal and congenital syphilis are markers of under development and lack of public health infrastructure.
Sad that we are adding " explosive growth in maternal syphilis" to the list of public health failures closing out 2025.

The #Ebola outbreak in central DRC that was first reported in September has been declared over. The outbreak, the country's 16th (I think), involved 64 cases (53 confirmed, 11 probable), of which 45 were fatal. It occurred in Bulape health zone in Kasai province. www.who.int/emergencies/...

🚨 With > 600 confirmed measles cases in 2025, the U.S. risks losing elimination status- despite vaccines costing <$1/child.
In our new commentary in @thelancet.bsky.social @saadomer.bsky.social and I call for urgent action on global immunization & preparedness

Another life lost to measles in Texas — the second in the state, third in the U.S. this year.
A measles vaccine costs less than $1.
Such a small price to pay to prevent a tragedy.

Is this an opportunity for the rest of the world to step up and create a situation not so US dependent? WHO needs to get aggressive with other countries and ask for more input. Easier said than done. I know.
Second measles death in the US
In a country that eliminated measles in 2000 due to the success of vaccination efforts

Childhood illnesses tend to be quite more severe in adults. Every adult I have ever seen with measles or chickenpox or mumps was hospitalized or very ill. To die of measles in 2025 is a sad and deeply unfortunate choice.

This is an important read. Most vaccine skeptic parents think they are protecting their children by choosing not to vaccinate. This is thanks to pervasive mis/disinformation. Understanding why the change their minds is informative to improve vaccine uptake.

Not too suprising that when the uptake of the MMR vaccine is low, it brings not 1 but all 3 dieases it usually protects from:
measles
Mumps and as here
Rubella

With CDC and Public Health decisions/meetings in the USA being postponed, now is the time for PHAC in Canada to step up! PHAC should become a beacon for Public Health leadership!
10/ The solution is simple: Vaccination.
📌 The MMR vaccine is safe, effective, and necessary.
📌 To maintain elimination, we need ≥95% coverage.
📌 Public health vigilance is key.
Measles elimination was a major victory—let’s not lose it.
Outbreak are NOT USUAL NOT SHOULD THEY BECOME THE NORM.
