And it's part of the reason why even when Maleane does find what we'd consider the closest to a 'normal life' and a 'normal family' with Halsin... the shoe simply doesn't fit. She still feels like she's assuming the role of someone fit for those circumstances. Because pretending comes naturally

to myself, as an artist and her creator: what 'home' means to someone who had such a unique upbringing? Who is defined by the fact that she doesn't really fit anywhere, utterly disconnected from both drow 'camps' that spawned her parents, but also from the surface world and its cultures.

Sometimes I think a little too hard about Maleane and her life and my heart sinks with sadness. One of the main themes of her story is chasing a sense of home without really knowing what it is and subsequently being unable to find it. It is also a creative (and somewhat philosophical) question
