Gallipoli book exchanges with the one and only Haluk Oral
Had a good week walking Gallipoli with a group following in the footsteps of the 54th East Anglian Division, in particular the Norfolk and Suffolk regiments
Next stop Constantinople, or is that Istanbul
It was good to present a talk about Orlo Williams ‘Inside GHQ’ Gallipoli Diary today. “The history of the Gallipoli campaign rich in military lessons, should also serve as a general warning to all who at crises place undue confidence in Cabinets.’

Lessons from Gallipoli have been resurfacing in recent weeks. History shows us that narrow waterways cannot be captured by force alone. The Dardanelles is an example that should not be ignored otherwise the Gulf of Hormuz will be another naval graveyard #diplomacy
A worthy Gallipoli Association project to map the Helles battlefield. Please watch, subscribe to the GA channel, and consider a donation @gallipoliassoc.bsky.social youtu.be/Ph7QbqeUyag
With the school group we explored the hills of northern Greece today from Roupel gorge to Lake Doiran #Salonika 🇬🇷🇲🇰 🇧🇬
We visited the grave of a Limerick lad, Private Patrick Joseph Downey, who was 18 when he enlisted. He survived the Gallipoli campaign to be shot at dawn in Salonika for “disobedience.” Downey had refused to put on his cap #StPatricksDay ☘️ #RIP
Exploring the British Birdcage trenches and bunkers in Salonika today. The school group loved getting off the beaten track 🇬🇷
Off to Greece 🇬🇷 Macedonia 🇲🇰 to visit the Balkan/WW1/WW2 battlefields
My kids were in for a real treat last night and surprisingly voted the film an average of 8.5 out of 10. Of course I rate it higher. Now to read ‘Fifty Men in the Valley of the Shadow’, the making of The Wild Geese
110 years ago, Émile Driant and thousands of others were killed in the opening days of Verdun.
To mark the anniversary, I’ve reworked my short film on the battle, told in 5 minutes.
If you cant name the 4 men pictured...then you need to watch!

#OnThisDay in February 1916 the battle of Verdun began. The longest battle in modern history - Ils ne passeront pas #OTD #History #Verdun
Some superb First World War aerial photos and trench maps. It’s like being a kid in a sweet shop 😁
1/2: Back from a magical 6 days with some of the SGWT team exploring Verdun & the Meuse-Argonne. Trenches were walked, bunkers explored, stories uncovered, steak enjoyed & perhaps the odd beer along the way.
Verdun - The scene of utter devastation
German bats in France
Bonsoir Verdun
Alpine 110 would look good on the drive … and to drive!
FACT OF THE DAY. 16 January 1957. The original Cavern Club opened at 10 Mathew Street in Liverpool as a jazz club. The club later became a centre for the Merseybeat boom of the early 1960s. The Beatles played regularly at the venue until 1963. The original club was demolished in 1973.
A surprising sunny day in Dieppe with a group as we study the disastrous 1942 raid and why it wasn’t going to be “a piece of cake"
Black and white photo, snow covered ground, troops huddled in group, horse drawn carts on road running between earth embankments, skeletal trees, buildings behind. Imperial War Museum Q 8356.

The First World War is never too far away, or that of the Crimean War. A Verdun sign in Mauritius 🇲🇺 … which is not too far away from a Balaclava
After 15 hrs of travel, it’s now beer o clock 🍻
