Protecting Iran's cultural heritage from who, ASOR?
The country you refuse to cut ties with despite its endless stream of war crimes in 🇵🇸, 🇱🇧 & 🇮🇷? The country whose Zionist interests you keep catering to? Yes, ISRAEL. Reminder that ASOR is under a call for boycott from @archagainstaparth.bsky.social

The refusal to acknowledge or to do anything about the complicity of archaeology with this violence is why I won't participate in the @asor-research.bsky.social meeting again this year.

If you are an archaeologist, please consider signing this letter, to ask for democracy, transparency, and accountability in the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) ee-eu.kobotoolbox.org/x/xZZjy6le #archaeology
😍 The one and only Hind Khoudary endorses @archagainstaparth.bsky.social's call to boycott ASOR! This is major. Here is the link to the post she hyperlinked in her ig story today everydayorientalism.wordpress.com/2025/12/17/a...

Mark your calendars! Next Wednesday, on the 25th of March, Professor Mahmoud Hawari of Bethlehem University will present on the topic of Israeli settler colonialism and the erasure of Palestinian cultural heritage #archaeology #🏺
🇮🇱 threat to destroy the UNESCO site of Tyre follows their theft of & attempted annihilation of Gazan heritage, as well as the targeting of several heritage sites in Lebanon, Iran & Palestine over the past 2+ weeks. Full list here 🧵 👇 bsky.app/profile/isis...
🚨🚨🚨 ISRAEL THREATENS TO BOMB TYRE, INCL. ITS ANCIENT CITY
"This places one of the most significant UNESCO sites in the E Mediterranean under direct threat & constitutes a serious violation of internatonal humanitarian law, amounting to a war crime, given the protected status of cultural property"
I am personally going to divest from the organization. I'm going to claw back my dues, and I'm not serving on award committees or attending.
We cannot continue to pour into a place that does value our lives.
We are reaching out to the full membership to provide clarity about ASA's approach to public policy matters, the member petition process outlined in the ASA bylaws, and the impact of member actions on ASA. You may be aware that a member-led petition has been circulating online. Supported by 428 individuals, the petition calls for ASA to boycott Israeli academic institutions and proposes various actions for ASA to take in furtherance of this goal. The ASA Executive Office received the petition on March 3, 2026. You can review the full petition here. ASA regularly adopts public policy positions that advance the discipline by advocating for sociological research, teaching, practice, and funding. This includes positions like our winning lawsuit defending academic freedom, letters to Congress calling for robust financial support for the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies that fund sociological research, and initiating efforts that illuminate the vital role of sociologists and sociology departments in institutions of higher education and society, to name a few. This is by design. According to ASA policy, there are only two conditions under which ASA may take public positions on issues: if there is consensus in the sociological literature about a topic, or if the issue concerns the wellbeing of the discipline and profession. ASA bylaws do provide an avenue where "[voting members of the Association may take any action otherwise within the powers of the Council regarding public policy positions of the Association." This is the strategy that the recent petition creators attempted to utilize. ASA leadership, in consultation with ASA legal counsel, determined that the proposed petition actions fall outside of the scope for member petitions under Section 9 of the Bylaws. All of the proposed actions are governance matters related to ASA business operations and are therefore not petitionable. Only ASA Council can make decisions regarding ASA operational and gov…
Proposing ASA action regarding global challenges that are outside of our individual control might be of interest to a segment of the membership, but ASA members are not a homogenous group. It is important that we understand that petitions have the potential to divide, rather than unite, the sociological community. For example, in response to the 2024 resolution, many members left ASA, citing various reasons: feeling personally attacked because of their identity, silenced because of their beliefs and convictions, and general discomfort about being associated with what they felt was becoming a political organization even if they were personally sympathetic to the cause. Our community was significantly harmed. Our association suffered enduring reputational and financial consequences as groups that we counted among our allies in the past have shied away, membership shrunk, and legal and other professional expenses mounted. These outcomes coincided with multiple attacks on our discipline that could have been best addressed by a united community with a shared purpose and message. As we write this letter, we are witnessing concerning events domestically and abroad, which deeply impact many members personally and professionally. We encourage all sociologists to advocate for the things they care about. While the possibilities for advocating are limitless for individuals, ASA must follow our policy and remain focused on our mission of advancing the discipline of sociology. ASA is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. This commitment is reflected in our diversity statement and is among our stated strategic priorities. Actions that attempt to silence, divide, or otherwise create an exclusionary environment distract us from our mission and threaten the vitality of our community. Our discipline is currently being tested in myriad ways. We hope ASA members will choose to unite around our shared interest in defending our discipline and shaping a brigh…

Mind you this was spread around mostly by word-of-mouth, with folks posting it to a few listserves towards the end. Signatures were amassed in a week. The petition is WILDLY popular but racists don't care about facts.
A teaching moment.
So @asanews.bsky.social emailed its membership its refusal to put a petition to Boycott, Divest, & Sanction Israel up to a vote, one that already had 438 signatures. This undemocratic decision, they wrote, is because they're worried about membership dropping.
Well do I have news for you.

🚨🚨🚨 🇮🇱 BOMBED NEXT TO THE UNESCO SITE OF BAALBEK
This adds to the 🇺🇸🇮🇱 axis targeting of a series of heritage sites in Iran, Palestine and Lebanon over the past week (see post 👇 🧵)
Just like @asor-research.bsky.social which is the object of a boycott campaign launched by @archagainstaparth.bsky.social. ASA's move also echoes the European Association of Archaeologists' executive moves from last year. Absolute sellouts all around.
All archaeologists should make themselves aware of how Israel co-opts heritage as an instrument in its apartheid, ethnic cleansing & genocide against Palestinians. Not to do so is to choose wilful ignorance, silence, & complicity #boycottisrael #boycottisraeliarchaeology
New piece w. Everyday Orientalism illustrating how Israel’s historic cultural erasure against Palestinians continues in the present, using heritage as a pretext to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from their land
