A) Diagram showing how EtfD transfers electrons from beta oxidation to the menaquinol pool in the membrane, linking beta oxidation to oxidative phosphorylation in mycobacteria.
B) A growth curve showing the Mycobacterium smegmatis lacking EtfD can grow when glucose is provided as the carbon source, but has a slight growth delay. Complementing the ∆etfD strain with M. tuberculosis on a plasmid rescues the defect.
C) A growth curve showing that ∆etfD M. smegmatis cannot grow on medium where the fatty acid oleic acid is the only carbon source. A plasmid with with M. tuberculosis EtfD rescues the defect.

EtfD links beta oxidation to OxPhos in mycobacteria - recent work suggests that targeting EtfD could shorten #tubeculosis treatment.
But how does EtfD work? And how can you assay its activity?
In his final PhD manuscript @courbongautier.bsky.social provides answers!

Baby Is Healed With World’s First Personalized Gene-Editing Treatment

Simply incredible story of the triumph of the US biomedical research ecosystem. Think of all the strands of discovery over many decades that came together to save this child. In large part becuase of NIH. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/15/h...

Tuberculosis myth: "Tuberculosis is easy to treat." Fact: Yes, with access to quality health care, tuberculosis (TB) is curable! And no: TB is expensive to cure (~$23K in the USA). TB Requires 4-6 months of daily treatment to cure. TB must be accurately diagnosed before it can be treated, and the tests are often unaffordable where they are most needed.

#Tuberculosis is the world's deadliest infectious disease, but it has a cure! However, because of cost, treatment length, and availability of testing, not everyone can complete treatment. www.who.int/news-roo...

Pleased to highlight a new preprint from the lab. This is the work of my longtime collaborator in the lab Allison Fay, who wanated to create new tools for disocvery biology in mycobacteria, specifically a new sysem for protein localizaton and proximity proteomics.

Gender equality doesn’t just 'happen.'

Women’s rights must be fought for and protected.

Our responsibility is clear.

To lead by example and create a world where opportunities are fair for all.

Not just today, but every single day.

What Gutting USAID Means for My Young Patients in Burundi “To my patients and their mothers, I offered apologies from the American people,” writes Dr. Jennifer Furin.

This is a gut-wrenching, beautifully written essay. A doctor must watch helplessly as children die because USAID's freeze on aid has limited access to nutritional supplements. time.com/7258248/us-f...
