Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK without an independent Environmental Protection Agency. We also don’t have legally binding Nature Targets.

Nature needs accountability. Email your MLA today: action.rspb.org.uk/page/188327/...

Northern Ireland is one of the most nature depleted places on the planet. We’ve no independent EPA and no legally binding nature targets. This must change.

A delicately patterned Orange-tip butterfly clings to a vibrant bluebell, its intricately mottled green and white wings blending seamlessly with the foliage. The butterfly’s fuzzy body and slender antennae contrast against the smooth, curled petals of the bluebell, which droop gracefully on a slender stem. The soft-focus green background enhances the vivid hues of the butterfly and flower, capturing a fleeting moment of springtime beauty.

Major win for Great Britain: lead ammunition will be banned in outdoor shooting! This historic ban on lead ammunition in Great Britain sets a powerful precedent for other nations to follow.

Ban on sale and use of most lead ammunition in Wales, Scotland and England confirmed to be in place from 1 April 2029. Good.

Avian flu has severely impacted breeding seabirds. Modelling study evaluates carcass removal as a tool to manage outbreaks, finding that it offers only limited benefits in reducing mortality in dense breeding colonies 🪽💡

Some of the most worrying impacts of nature loss weren’t disclosed to the public.

This is a must watch and makes clear what’s at stake if we fail to commit to urgent action for nature. 👇

Black Waters: The Sea Empress Disaster In 1996, an oil tanker called the Sea Empress ran aground on the Pembrokeshire coast, spilling its contents and causing an environmental disaster that shocked the UK and the world.

Really powerful BBC documentary just out about the 1996 Sea Empress disaster in Pembrokeshire. Highly recommended. What a disaster to be reminded of...

URGENT: our most precious wild places need your voice. ‼️

The Prime Minister is considering weakening the laws that protect nature.

Estuaries. Peatlands. National Parks. The places & species we love are in the firing line again.

All on the false assumption this will speed up nuclear projects.

An Atlantic Puffin stands on a narrow, rocky cliff ledge streaked with lichen and tufts of grass. Its black back and white chest contrast with the pale stone, and its bright orange bill catches the light. The blurred backdrop of steep coastal rock faces hints at a rugged seabird colony, one of the special coastal habitats that provide vital nesting sites for wildlife.

Which is why the habitats they fight to return to must be protected.

Weakening protections for key sites for nature would push our already struggling wildlife closer to collapse.

Yet the UK Government is considering doing just that.

Heartbreaking: Right now, thousands of Puffins are washing up along our coasts and further afield.

It is devastating to see.

These birds are Red-listed in the UK and already under serious pressure.

The failure of the Executive to agree proposals for an independent EPA is deeply concerning. NI is the only part of the UK or Ireland without one, despite years of expert recommendations. At a time of biodiversity loss and environmental crisis, strong, independent oversight is urgently needed.

Biodiversity collapse threatens UK security, intelligence chiefs warn Ecosystem destruction will increase food shortages, disorder and mass migration, with effects already being felt

UK intelligence chiefs warn biodiversity collapse isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s a national security threat. Food shortages, mass migration, economic instability and conflict could follow if ecosystems keep collapsing.

The threat’s closer than we think.

The climate and biodiversity crises go hand in hand with national security.

Today’s chilling warning from intelligence experts shows the very real risks of inaction within the next five years.

For years, experts have warned that nature loss would become a security threat.

Now a national security assessment confirms it: biodiversity collapse risks food shortages, economic instability and global disorder.

Nature underpins our global safety. So why is UK Government failing to protect it?

Nature security assessment on global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security This strategic assessment explores how global biodiversity loss and the collapse of critical ecosystems could affect the UK’s resilience, security and prosperity.

An across-government technical assessment published today recognises that "nature is the foundation of national security" and that "every critical ecosystem is on a pathway to collapse". A rational response to this would be to get very serious about nature recovery.
