Just submitted my article which is the intro to the theme of @ancientwarfare.bsky.social issue 107: Augustus' German Wars, and all those forts on the Rhine and Lippe rivers. Look for that soon.

I'm told that the news stories of discoveries in archaeology and scholarship in this issue of @ancientwarfare.bsky.social are particularly fascinating. Don't miss them! Pre-order here: https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/en-us/products/ancient-warfare-106 #AncientBluesky

One of the so-called 'Tabulae Iliacae', a series of plaques, dated to the first century AD, depicting various scenes from the Trojan War. All surviving examples are ascribed to the workshop of one Theodoros, a Greek artisan likely active in Italy.
The @ancientwarfare.bsky.social team just wrapped up another podcast. I missed it owing to work commitments, so I'll be interested to listen to the discussion of Roman legions in the second century AD covered in issue 105 when it is released by The History Network.

Marek Szyszko usually paints our covers, but when Graham Sumner asks if he can try, you don't say no. And he did not disappoint!
Just seen the artwork that will accompany my feature article in the next issue of @ancientwarfare.bsky.social. It's wonderful! I'm always amazed at how illustrators turn words into pictures. This one is especially atmospheric. It recreates the sacrifice scene in the Bridgeness Slab.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Tonight we're recording a new Ancient Warfare podcast. With the holidays in the offing, we thought it was time to go over some good books you might like to read. Suggestions very welcome! My shelves are too full already, but that's not stopped me so far...
New! Ancient History Magazine 57 now available for pre-order. https://tny.app/f5u4fwbo
Would love to. I fear it’d be very hard to maintain our usual levels of illustration, but I’m eager to publish single articles. Often easier to do!
Just submitted the news for @ancientwarfare.bsky.social issue 105. Stories of exciting archaeological and historical discoveries in Austria, Croatia, Egypt, Italy, Peru, Spain and Turkey. #AncientBluesky

It is - we did an issue on Wars in Sicily a decade or so ago (yikes...), issue VII.2: www.karwansaraypublishers.com/products/iss...
I was trying to find some appropriate art to help illustrate an article in another magazine. Doing so, I realized we've not served the Archaic Greek period very extensively. If we published another theme on that era, what topics would you suggest?
Years ago, in a previous edition of our site, you might've run into a photo of sad looking labrador, Jack. He passed away in 2023 😢. This is now my morning ritual when we get to the office...
Preparing a visual brief for a cartographer (who will be making a map for my article in @ancientwarfare.bsky.social on 'vexillations' in the Roman Army in the C2nd AD) is an interesting challenge, meaning reconciling written accounts with archaeological finds. (📷 is my own).

This has gone totally by me... I feel I need to update my subscription
104 issues and counting! It’s been a privilege to be a member of the team that produces this terrific magazine as news editor, feature writer and podcaster. If you’ve not seen a copy of @ancientwarfare.bsky.social magazine published by Karwansaray, find one at your local newsagent. #AncientBluesky
We advertise the Online archive (chk.me/208Vxv9) as a really neat way to read AW and access back issues, but it's particularly convenient for us too when planning themes as I don't instantly remember everything we've published. And yet, looking back, I can still see so many options! Ideas welcome!
The latest episode of the Ancient Warfare podcast is out! The team discusses issue 104, "Who Put You in Charge? Commanding an Army in Antiquity." With @clogfather.bsky.social and

Just submitted my feature article on army detachments ('vexillationes') for issue 105 of @ancientwarfare.bsky.social covering the Roman legion in the second century AD. Look for that in December. #AncientBluesky www.karwansaraypublishers.com/en-us/pages/...

Gosh, it was very high time I updated the editorial plan. So I did! We haven't decided on the themes after 106. Suggestions are still welcome. www.karwansaraypublishers.com/pages/editor...
