A brown, orange and white Greater Manchester Transport bus is in a busy street scene, with lots of pedestrians milling around. The bus has the route number nine oh five in its destination display. Just in front of the bus there's a red pillar box, and on the other side of the street there's a red brick Victorian building of some kind.

It's #MysteryMonday so here's a pic from our archives - and it's over to you to say where it was taken. But this time we don't just want the exact location - we want the date, too. Are you up for the challenge? Tell us if you think you know!

Two Museum of Transport buses stand in the rain. The one on the left is red with a pale cream band, and the one on the right looks more modern and is red and white. They both have the destination Bell View.

It's #SaturdayShowoff, when we highlight an item from our collection and maybe tempt you to visit. This week it's two generations of #Manchester buses, 1001 and 3629 seen on a trip out to Belle Vue. Want to see them? Visiting details at motgm.uk

An urban street scene shows a brown, orange and white Greater Manchester Transport bus at a bus shelter. The area looks a little careworn and there's waste ground on the right being used as a car park; while the Victorian buildings on the left look uncared for and run down.

Today's #ThrowbackThursday takes us to Todd Street, near Victoria station in the mid 1980s. It's fair to say this scene looks different today! The National Football Museum now occupies the land to the right, with the Hotel Indigo on the left.

...the Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport has announced today that our application has been successful.

The grant will pay for much-needed repairs to our historic home, and we’re very pleased that the grant will help safeguard our collection for the long term.

A view inside the Museum of Transport, with most buses removed so you get a really good view of the wide, trussed roof. The roof and the girders are painted white, and below we can see some museum and visiting buses parked inside the museum's upper exhibition hall.

We’re delighted to share the news that we’ve been awarded a grant of £244,000 by @artscouncilengland.bsky.social as part of its MEND (Museum Estate and Development) fund. We applied for funding to repair and upgrade the museum’s building and especially its roof, and...

Very handsome - and so are the crew! We've used our buses and our museum in lots of TV/film productions to add realism. If you're in the industry and you'd like to know more about our film hire work, drop a line to media.relations@gmts.co.uk.

A black and white photo shows a 1960s double deck bus in a bus lay by, next to a bus shelter. On the right, the driver is standing next to the bus and looking at it. On the opposite side of the road on the left, there's a very smart Jaguar saloon parked by the kerb, and a few yards along there seems to be a church gate.

It's December 1963. The bus is new; the Jaguar is smart; the driver is wearing his peaked cap. But where is it? We know, but we're not saying! Tell us if you think you know, and we'll confirm the answer later. #MysteryMonday

A smart 1980s bus stands on a main road, in an unusual colour scheme of coral pink, brown, red and orange. On the upper deck there's a very prominent 'Express' title, and lower down we can see the fleet name Gee Em Buses.

A photograph taken in 1990 shows the rear of a bus as it drives away from the camera, steering round extensive roadworks at the top of Market Street. The roadworks are part of the construction of the Metrolink system and we can see rails for the new trams and poles for the overhead wires.

#ThrowbackThursday this week takes us to Market Street in Manchester, about 1990, watching the buses negotiate the Metrolink construction work. The roadworks disruption was controversial at the time but we suspect very, very few people would prefer to have no Metrolink today.

A close-up of one of the museum's buses, shows the word Board written in gold on its green painted panel. The paintwork is covered in soapy water - it looks like the bus is being washed.

We see four items from the museum of transport's online shop, all placed on a red background. From left to right there's an information leaflet from 1964; a book called the Manchester bus; a GM Buses fleet list; and a key ring with a tiger's head on it.

A colour photo, taken in the late nineteen sixties, shows a green double deck bus heading away from the camera. There are vintage cars ahead of it and behind it, and on the other side of the road we can glimpse a couple of red buses travelling in the opposite direction. Behind that we can just see what seems to be a modern shopping centre, and further down the road in the distance we see older small shops.

We certainly recognise the bus on today's #MysteryMonday pic - it's our own SHMD 70, the unique double deck Atkinson bus that's now in our museum. But do you know where the photo was taken? It's over to you to say, and we'll confirm the answer later.

It's mainly yellow in colour. Next to him, to the right, is Dennis Talbot who is the Chairman of the Museum of Transport.

We were very sorry to hear today that Eamonn Boylan has died. He was formerly the Chief Executive of GMCS (Greater Manchester Combined Authority) and a good friend to our museum. He last visited us in April 2024, when our Chairman presented him with a framed vintage poster in thanks for his support.

We’d say early sixties - the bus was new in November 1960.

A black and white photo shows a Wigan Corporation bus in the town's Market Place. The destination display says it's going to Standish. To the right of the bus we can see a set of stairs with ornate railings, leading underground - it looks like a public toilet. Next to the railings there's a bus stop and a sign pointing to a Police call box - the kind of structure that younger people would only recognise as the Doctor Who Tardis.

This is a mouth-watering #ThrowbackThursday photo! It's #Wigan, in the Market Place, watching a bus to Standish. Lots of lovely details such as an underground loo and a signpost for a Police call box. We have a Wigan bus at our museum in its lovely crimson colour scheme - come and see it some time.
