In celebration of the 235th Anniversary of Anne Lister’s birth, we are sharing this short clip about the connection between Ann Walker and Old St Matthew’s, Lightcliffe.
Ann Walker was the partner of Anne Lister of Shibden Hall.
🎂 Happy birthday to the one and only #AnneLister! 235 years later, and she's still making headlines...
On this day in 1834, Anne Lister and Ann Walker took the sacrament at Holy Trinity Goodramgate in York to seal their union, in what is often described as the first lesbian marriage in Britain.

However, even though her library was fairly large when she was alive, we have only managed to track five of Anne’s books! 🤓
These survive in libraries and museums across the UK and Europe.

Was it the plum pudding itself, or simply the intentional gesture? To find out, try your hand at a period-appropriate treat to commemorate the day with Maria Rundell’s 1814 recipe 👇
#AnneLister and #AnnWalker celebrated their anniversary each year on February 10, often with the recurring tradition of plum pudding and wine.
These journal excerpts from 1835 to 1840 offer us a glimpse into their ritual, which had a remarkable way of softening tensions and stirring connection.
