Throwback to 2015! Some old artwork has found its way to a new exhibition in Paris. 'La Fabrique du Temps' explores the theme of time through postal objects and contemporary art. My original watercolour illustrations of the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter's tea party both feature in the exhibition.

Here’s a quick flick-through of my illustrations for Becoming Grace by the wonderful #hilarymckay. Hilary brings to life the world Grace Darling knew before her fame - the hardships and excitement of growing up in a lighthouse, with her large family and a dog called Happy. Out April 10th!

This is the full-wrap artwork for the dust jacket of Wolf Mountain by @profaliceroberts.bsky.social , coming this April!
I thought it might be fun to animate a parallax pan of the artwork layers.

A portrait of a boy in school uniform. There are slashes through his face, flowers and thorny vines growing through. The colours are washed out apart from a rose growing where his right eye should be.

Portrait of a boy with dark wavy hair emerging from a thicket of thorny vines like somebody near drowning coming up for air. Vines cover his eyes, scratches cover his skin. Soft pink flowers surround him.

Happy publication day to Robin Hood!

I’ve illustrated several covers for the re-issue of Michael Morpurgo’s catalogue but I think this is my favourite, not least because Robin was my childhood hero!

Mountain background for a thing. I do like drawing mountains!

Sometimes, not often, it seems like all you have to do is turn up and the work makes itself. Today was a day like that.

I love charcoal, it’s almost magical. You put it down, treat it nicely and it just does stuff for you.

Book cover illustration showing a fiery red sky over the london skyline, with tower bridge in the distance. Searchlight beams criss-cross the sky where bomber planes are flying. In the foreground four young people - two boys and two girls, are sitting on the sloping rooftops of terraced houses. One boy has his arm around a scruffy dog. They are backlit, looking out across the river Thames towards the distant london skyline. Below them, bombed-out dockside buildings are burning.

I was thrilled to illustrate this cover for the new book by award-winning, New York Times bestselling author, Geraldine McCaughrean.
The fiery sky was painted with gouache and the smoke textures were made with charcoal, all put together in photoshop and finished digitally. Out April '25

I do actually have a new book out this year, but I'm going to continue to promote my other books too because there are still too many young readers who haven't yet discovered this interactive series in which YOU decide what happens next & yet there are no dead ends. They're different to other books.

Here are some of my favourite bits from 2024. Thank you to all the wonderful authors and publishers who have let me draw all over their work.
I’ve also done a lot of silly reference poses this year - here I am as the leader of a prehistoric tribe πŸ˜„

Book Cover illustration showing Grace Darling rowing in stormy seas, pulling on the oars as she battles large waves which break over the side of her boat in white foam spray. In the distance is a lighthouse, whose light is shining out in the gathering dawn light.

It's a pleasure to have illustrated my third book for @hilarymckay.bsky.social, whose writing I love.
BECOMING GRACE is the real life story of Grace Darling, a lighthouse keeper's daughter, who overcame her fear of drowning to rescue stranded survivors on the Forfarshire. #kidlitart

Congratulations @colmthewriter.bsky.social and @hickesy.bsky.social for inclusion on Toppsta's 100 must-read children's books of 2024! toppsta.com/blog/view/be...
I had a blast doing these spooky covers. And remember kids, a psychotic shelf-elf is for life, not just for Christmas.

It's about that time of year when The Dark is Rising has to be read again! I'm looking forward to reading The Grimmlings - it's on my book-pile! (It also has one of the best covers I've seen this year 😊)

I've loved the Dark is Rising sequence since I was a kid but I've never seen her illustrations. What a treat! The cover I found (in a holiday cottage) isn't by her and I think it was a canadian edition. Digging online, I've found this first edition cover that IS by her - isn't it great?!
