Bit of both? Epilogues for the characters and things pertinent to the plot, but i like to leave loose ends for following arcs/world development since campaigns are usually in the same world

The new design prints face up fantastically! I might actually know what I’m doing 😝

Almost, because I’m still dialing in ironing with a 0.2 nozzle and I am SO CLOSE.

On the plus side I have pieces that are close enough for testing with potential mold release alternatives one can find in the house.

Could it be a travel mag such as Fantastical Geographic?

Come on down and check out the wares, capitalism sucks but it's what we got...for now.

Accidentally went fancy with the new blank design BUT it doesn't need supports to print face up! In theory. I do have concerns about the overhangs but the proof will be in the 3D printed pudding - ETA 1 hr 6 min.

The nice thing is these blanks amount to 8-10 cents each (at my current filament cost)

Sadly the ironing settings still weren’t as good as I wanted so I’ll play with them and save that for round 3 with tweaks to the engraving depth (making it shallower to increase the draft angle), and also model a blank that can be printed either face up or down without supports.

(To be continued)

Since I didn’t get a good side by side comparison I started with printing face down on a smooth plate. Same tests with hair spray and putting the stamp in the freezer, but this time also trying a combo of those… which maybe helped?

If the release was better it was only slightly.

For V2 I really wanted to get a better draft, which unfortunately meant redrawing the symbol in the modeling software, for which I used an imported image with much thicker lines.

For printing I’m also tweaking the elephants foot and ironing settings.

As you can see, stamping at room temp without a release agent *does* work but it is *tough* to peel away, and there was a bit of wax tearing.

A cold stamp had the biggest effect for peeling away ‘easily’ (still a little bit of work), though there was some damage to the wax.

OK, tests round 1 - only using the face up #3Dprint (because i learned enough for V2 before reprinting the face down)

I tested stamping with hairspray as a mold release, putting the stamp in the freezer before using, and this is when I realised the elephant’s foot setting issue, so I did a control.

Let’s go back to that other mistake I mentioned, because I’m testing the difference between printing face down on a smooth plate & face up with ironing on to smooth out top surfaces.

Yeah, I forgot to make a model that wouldn’t need supports regardless of orientation.

ANYWAY, ironing @ 15% flow

A 3D printed wax seal stamp gummed up with red wax

For the first test I just wanted to see what would happen if I dove right in. I know others said they cool theirs down with ice first but let’s be science adjacent about this!

Well.. see for yourself.

I later realised my elephants foot compensation was at 0… which likely contributed to this.

A wax seal stamp with a 3D printed head depicting a dragon’s eye.

At some point I’ll play with infill percentages to see what, if any, effect that has on the stamping process. But…

Isn’t it pretty? The threads were a bit tight so V2 will use M9 instead of M8.

As usual I forgot how being zoomed in all the time distorts my scale perception.

A 3D print monitor showing a wax seal stamp base 25% to completion.

Some programs can’t add those angled sides in, mine could but it was a *pain in the butt* because it doesn’t like imported SVGs. Nevertheless I powered through and was able to get some slight angles going.

ON TO 3D PRINTING!

PLA, 0.2mm nozzle, 30% infill, smooth cool plate.

3d model of a wax seal stamp base, etched in is a dragon’s eye

Thankfully I got rid of some thinner lines that wouldn’t translate well, turned it into an SVG & imported it - simple!

NOT SIMPLE!

Molds like to have drafts/chamfers. It helps release the (in this case) wax. I noticed other people doing this weren’t adding drafts. Why?

A 3D model of a wax seal stamp head.

Now that we have our measurements we can model a blank that I can keep reusing for other stamp designs. Keeping it simple for now - can you see the mistake I made?

BTW, in case the threading isn’t standard, I do plan on modelling a handle people can print too (assuming this all comes out well)
