Ha! I had a wee binge last night and am now finished S5E2. There are some real heavy hitters in there, and I managed to forget some very wild stuff since my last watch! Tears were shed! Cats were cuddled!

Every day there are new announcements from the Canadian federal government gutting science programs. I was just notified that the National Boreal Caribou Knowledge Consortium (NBCKC) is dead.

Terrible shame to do this at time when boreal caribou are in real trouble.

Well this is fcking crazy. Work from @msbbirds.bsky.social and others found that Black Metaltail hummingbirds can drop their body temperature down to 3 °C (37 °F) during torpor. 🤯 Turns out birds aren't warm-blooded after all! royalsocietypublishing.org/rsbl/article...

I had the privilege of meeting Kirsty Duncan back in 2017. She was warm and sincere. She was our first and only 🇨🇦 Minister of Science who was a trained scientist. She consistently worked for positive meaningful change in all her government roles. Condolences to her family and friends.

My annual "DO IT!" encouragement post!

Selfishly, my time on CSEE council was the highlight of my PhD, it opened doors and opportunities that research alone did not. And I think we accomplished some good things for the society! 🧪🌎

In at no. 7 of our most popular papers of the year, we have a #BiologyLetters study that discovered up to 6% of individuals in five wild #bird species naturally switch sex, with genetically male birds developing female traits and vice versa: doi.org/10.1098/rsbl...
