The invisible code running the world (and who pays for it) - Software Heritage The era of the “free lunch” in open source is over. As the global economy rests on an invisible layer of volunteer-led code, the foundations are beginning to crack under the weight of “maintainer fatigue.” Leaders from the EU issued a blunt warning: digital sovereignty isn’t built on software alone—it’s built on the “invisible” labor of the people who maintain it.

Digital sovereignty in the age of software forges: Why preserving source code matters Software Heritage collects publicly available source code from numerous software projects and tracks their ongoing development. In an era dominated by software forges, control over source code has become a matter of scientific and digital sovereignty. Software now underpins nearly every stage of research, from data collection and simulation to analysis and validation. When source code is unavailable, unstable, or lost, scientific results become harder to verify, reproduce, and build upon. Preserving source code ensures that research remains understandable, reproducible, and reusable over time.

Morane Gruenpeter shared her #deRSE26 keynote slides on #DigitalSovereignty and the mission of Software Heritage to preserve this vital intellectual heritage. https://zenodo.org/records/18848442
