We used radar to study the role that urban landscapes play in migratory bird stopover. Spoiler: birds use cities a lot, and the patterns of their use reflect social processes and the inequities embedded in them.

Hoy es el día mundial de los cocodrilos, y la verdad es que me parece una maravilla y gran privilegio poder pasarlo en campo (ya en el final), disfrutando de estos animales tan enigmáticos, asombrosos e imponentes.

Hoy le dije a Abril que estaba muy orgulloso de lo que ha hecho por y con su tesis, y en serio lo estoy.
Hasta yo me sorprendí porque siempre suelo presionar, no halagar, y decir “es lo mínimo que se espera, lo normal, ¿qué sigue?” pero creo que hoy fue un buen día.

Aquí un recordatorio

Hace un año también tuvimos un caso de desarrollo gemelar en C. acutus en la Reserva SETAL, sin embargo, a diferente de este año, en 2024 solo uno de los dos individuos sobrevivió a la eclosión.

Hoy pudimos ver una eclosión de gemelos de cocodrilo americano. Midieron unos 20 y 22 cm, algunos centímetros por debajo del promedio, ambos bastante activos, listos para ser liberados donde su madre los espera.

Cuando los nidos son asistidos por miembros del proyecto y no por las madres, tenemos la oportunidad de tomar datos morfológicos y hacer marcaje, posterior a eso, son devueltos justo en el área del nido, donde las madres esperan aún por ellos.

Luego de que la madre excava el nido para ayudar a sus crías a salir, los neonatos ya están listos para ir al agua y permanecer junto a su madre por varios días o incluso semanas. Rompiendo levemente el cascarón y emitiendo sonidos, las hembras saben que es momento de ayudar.

Cuando los neonatos de los cocodrilos ya están fuera del nido (asistidos por la madre) buscan cercanía con su madre, algunos, hasta se posan sobre sus cabezas o dorsos para permanecer fuera del agua pero protegidos.

Today we start with the third phase of American crocodile nesting monitoring: the hatching🐣 .
For the next 2-3 weeks we’ll have the opportunity to will collect some valuable data from these beautiful young individuals.
The final stretch of a wonderful project, for which I hope so much more phases.

Durante las siguientes 2-3 semanas tocará sacar muchos datos de estos bellos y valiosos ejemplares recién salidos del nido.

Se registraron 9 (n=47) y 5 (n=50) nidos depredados entre 2023 y 2024, respectivamente. Además, de 2 neonatos (2024) depredados al momento de su eclosión. Al ser especies distribuidas naturalmente en Guatemala, entender la dinámica de las hormigas en la temporada de anidación es relevante.
