The Chicago skyline taken from an airplane about to land at O'Hare International Airport. It's a clear evening with very little haze.

View from an airplane on the ground of some taxiways against the evening sky, some wispy clouds, and a plane is shown in the distance taking off.

I mostly wasn't looking at social media or the news today and so hadn't looked at the list of Hugo finalists until now. Nifty list of works! Happy to see so many people I know on the list. Congratulations to all.

‘We did a seance for Beethoven, to see what he thought’: the playful, pioneering life of field-recording maestro Annea Lockwood The New Zealand composer burned pianos, sampled earthquakes and recorded Belfast’s peace walls. And at 86 is still invested in her life’s work: to appreciate the music in everyday sound

There's only one Annea Lockwood.

For my own wellbeing, sometimes it's best to completely ignore harsh reality & focus exclusively on one or all of our 3 pets.

In this case it's our youngest, Trixie (a/k/a Bat-Mite, a/k/a Spawn of Satan), who I love dearly. ♥️ 🐶

Finally, the movie that the studio that’s starts with the letter W and B didn’t want us to see will be releasing their first trailer tomorrow. I can’t wait to talk about it soon.

music nerds: I'm trying to remember the name of a modern piano piece consisting of only (I think) root/fifth notes played loudly and continuously for an extended period, with the sustain pedal open. Anyone know what this is?

From a high pass along the Möðrudalsleið in northern Iceland, a vast highland landscape unfolds — ash-toned hills rolling into an open plain, dotted with low volcanic ridges and distant peaks dissolving into a cool blue haze. The wind never settles here and your thoughts grow lighter with it — drifting, softening, gently losing themselves in the vast.

Ted Chiang once told our Clarion West class that our taste for stories would outstrip our talent for a good while, but that we would eventually catch up to it if we kept writing.

Just don’t give up. That’s all you have to do.

A hiking path up a mountain

A hiking path up a mountain

I have been wanting to hike for YEARS but unable because of my spine injury.

It’s taken one year and four months of determination and working hard on my mobility, but today I DID IT.

I could cry. You people have no idea. I never, ever thought I’d be able to do anything like that ever again. ❤️
