“Uruguay did what most nations still call impossible: it built a power grid that runs almost entirely on renewables—at half the cost of fossil fuels. The physicist who led that transformation says the same playbook could work anywhere—if governments have the courage to change the rules.”
@defendpublichealth.bsky.social is asking people to show up at town halls between now and when Congress reconvenes at the end of the month. We need to push back against NIH cuts and political interference. 1/
Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.
There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
This is a must-read piece by @math-rachel.bsky.social about AI evaluation, and how the system of reward and apportioning credit in AI research is broken rachel.fast.ai/posts/2025-0.... TL;DR -- we need deep fact checkers!

We are experiencing an assault on science unparalleled by anything I’ve seen in my life. It’s not one issue or another anymore, the entire institution is under attack by the most powerful individuals in the country.
This Friday, where will you be?

This work is not only an amazing resource for the community, it is also a total masterclass in code reusability, data FAIRness and reproducibility. Hopefully, this is the future!

82% of human protein-coding genes now have robust, consistent functional annotations, thanks to the combined efforts of biocurators across the GO consortium, Model Organism Databases, SwissProt/UniProtKB, all based on explicit evolutionary modeling via PANTHER families!
@pombase.bsky.social is proud to have contributed annotation to this extensive effort. Along with @flybase.bsky.social we also played a crucial role in improving annotation across species. Over 7 years, PomBase submitted ~600 PAINT update requests. @cambiochem.bsky.social
“High-quality biodata fuels solutions to global challenges—from health to biodiversity—and enables trustworthy AI. I signed the GBC Open Letter to help secure its future, and ours.” — Christophe Dessimoz, Executive Director, SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics #BioDataCounts
Our director @dessimoz.bsky.social signed the GBC Open Letter calling for support to sustain global biodata resources.

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.
A map of the Geography of the Gulf of Mexico. Off the coast of the US there is a platform of 200 m depth that has the Texas-Louisiana shelf, the Florida shelf, which extent southwards down the Mexico coast as the East Mexico Shelf and around the Yucatán Península as the Campeche Bank. The shelf is followed by an Escarpment that reaches up to 2000 m that on the north is called the Sigsbee Escarpment and in the south is called Campeche Escarpment. The whole body of water sits on the Mexico Basin, with a depth of 4376 m.
The Gulf of America is now the name for the northern portion of the Gulf of Mexico which sits on the Mexico Basin. Now is the time to be as pedantic as you can and journalists are dropping the ball. Sheinbaum already explained this in her morning press conference.
From the 52 Biodata resources listed on the GCBR website globalbiodata.org/what-we-do/g... 24 exist in the US, and of those, 12 are NOT mirrored, officially. Of these 52 resources, 29 are supported by the NIH. If Trump/Musk continue, we are FUBARed! #Bioinformatics #Genomics #SciPo 🧬 🖥️ 🧪
Since April, we have been busy curating pathways using GO-CAM pathway modelling. So far, 466 proteins (33 pathways) have been modelled. We have modelled signalling pathways, metabolic pathways, and other processes. The full list is here: www.pombase.org/documentatio..., and will increase weekly!
