#OnThisDay - 30 October - in 1829 the House of Meleager, Pompeii (VI.9.2), was excavated and offered up some truly staggering painted stucco reliefs. Imagine eyes being cast on this for the first time in 1750 years. #Pompeii #Archaeology🏺

A photo of a tunic with long sleeves, laid flat on display. The fabric is light brown and worn, decorated with embroideries and appliqués. Horizontal lines run across the waist area, visibly dividing the fabric. The garment shows signs of age with fraying edges and faded sections.
A sleeved tunic, made from linen, from Egypt, Roman Period, 4th century AD.
The garment, designed for a child, likely around five years old, has survived remarkably well due to the arid climate. The tunic's design allowed for adjustments as the child grew. 🧵 1/2

Located in the ancient Roman site of Théveste (modern-day Tébessa) in northeastern Algeria. It dates to the early 4th century AD, during the late Roman Empire. The mosaic shows scenes of viticulture and wine production. Thee top register, workers are depicted pruning vines trained on trellises. In the bottom register, figures are involved in the harvesting and pressing of grapes using a large wooden wine press. The vines are stylized in a looping, decorative manner, reflecting the artistic style of late Roman mosaics. It stands out as an example of how Roman mosaics celebrated labor, nature, and abundance, often intertwined with broader religious or philosophical themes.

The Mosaic of the Vine from Théveste is a masterpiece of #Roman North African art, blending agricultural realism with symbolic undertones.

Two wooden whisks, each with a central handle and multiple short, evenly spaced prongs radiating outward from one end. The prongs appear to be natural offshoots of the wood.
There are so many amazing finds from prehistoric pile dwellings settlements: 3,500-year-old wooden whisks found in settlements at the Lake Carera/Italy.
By rotating the shaft, it’s possible to whip cream until it turns into butter. Larger whisks were presumably used for.... 🧵 1/2
