A nice tutorial on distributed lag models using #rstats 📦 {mgcv}. But if you want to fit these to time series you might want to consider the {mvgam} 📦 instead ecogambler.netlify.app/blog/distrib...
🚨 New Paper 🚨
Coauthors and I just published our work in PLOS One on Canadian graduate funding. We found that Canadian graduate funding falls _well_ below cost of living.
On average, $10kCAD below cost of living.

Ontario is planning to replace its Endangered Species Act with weak legislation that will allow habitat destruction, killing endangered species and withdraw the province from planning for conservation of ES ero.ontario.ca/notice/025-0... Send comments to ero.ontario.ca/notice/025-0...
From CSTWS:
This is from a letter sent from MECP (Hilary Gignac, Manager, Landscape Species Recovery Section, Species at Risk Branch) describing the replacement of Ontario's Endangered Species Act in more detail. It is BAD NEWS. Please send comments to the ERO as linked by @marcofesta.bsky.social below. #onpoli
I will forever be haunted by this footage.
Trawling has only been filmed underwater a few times in documentary history, and never with such clarity.
What’s so heart-rending about these shots is watching how the animals don’t just get swept up — they swim for their lives.

(1/) On Good Friday, David from the BBS Team at BTO HQ completed his ‘Early’ visit to his square in Dorset. Although it was a challenging square to survey due to the terrain, he enjoyed it and it got him outside before it rained! @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social
alright i have my laptop, guess i'm livetweeting the dire wolf preprint.
so a quick reminder: this is not yet peer-reviewed, so there's some different expectations re: quality.

This speech by Justin Trudeau is quite impressive, especially the part in French at the end where he is actually inspiring (of course he's not the most popular man in Canada, so it might be a bit late for the flowery words).

Interesting work by van der Meersch et al. out in Ecology Letters, nicely illustrating that process-based models are more robust than correlative models for predicting species distributions under novel climatic conditions doi.org/10.1111/ele....

Scottish Terrestrial Breeding Bird indicators. The all-species indicator shows an increase from 94-05, but a gradual decline since.
1/ The @naturescot.bsky.social Scottish indicators were published last week. The data, a lot from @bbs-birds@bsky.social from 94-23, show how Scottish birds are doing in different habitats. Woodland birds are doing relatively well, but upland birds are in decline.
