What a day! On Saturday, I got to meet some of our incoming @msu-entomology.bsky.social majors at Admitted Students Day! The enthusiasm and drive of these soon-to-be freshmen was such a privilege to be around. Big thanks to @bugclubmsu.bsky.social members for coming out at Breslin and the Bug House!

Trump’s cuts threaten key NSF undergrad research program For decades, Research Experience for Undergraduates has been a golden ticket for students, funding summer research projects at top institutions. Now, at least a dozen are canceled.

Yet again, the cuts being made at the federal level are being done in the dumbest, and likely most harmful, way they could be. REUs are deeply impactful programs that open the doors to scientific careers and future innovation. www.insidehighered.com/news/student...

I know of three recent MSU Entomology alumni caught up in the indiscriminate firings of federal workers and at least three folks from my time at NCSU. If there are other MSU alumni affected, please reach out to me.

Trump’s Cuts Could Make Parks and Forests More Dangerous, Employees Say Thousands of employees who helped oversee vast areas of wilderness have lost their jobs in President Trump’s moves to shrink the federal work force.

All but one employee managing 300,000 acres of woodland in Washington was fired last week. Among their duties? Trash and human waste removal. Either these spaces won't be legally accessible to the public moving forward or they will be a literal trash pile. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/c...

There was a legitimate belief that messing with agriculture would be a low priority for the new administration. The last week confirmed that's not true. Growers need to understand that the support they have advocated for is being eroded just like everything else. www.goodfruit.com/mass-layoffs...

USDA probationary staff fired at three agencies, sources say U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has fired probationary staff at two U.S. Department of Agriculture research agencies and its farm loan agency, three sources familiar with the situation said on Friday.

I get we're also on the verge of international crisis, but I'm still baffled this isn't at the top of domestic news. 150,000 people fired in a matter of two days with no strategy or plan other than maximum cruelty.

Another damaging firing of a young scientist. Dr. Darling, an MSU Entomology alum, was working to rear parasitoids to control emerald ash borer and other devastating pests of forests and farms. There is no private sector equivalent doing this work, and this loss means less control for these pests l.
