Powderhall / Leith Walk / Easter Road / Meadowbank path negotiations continue between Edinburgh Council & Network Rail Scotland, & assessments have taken place on the bridges down the route.

However we're a whiles until any spade can hit the ground. The funding picture was answered back in Feb too.

I commute at 16-20kph, and I’m faster than most people cycling to work on my route.

For me:

15 minute drive
15 minute cycle
45 minute walk
30 minute bus

The walk is very lovely though (especially now with the birdsong). Nice to get some fresh air.

I don’t think suggesting only very short commutes are possible by bicycle is right, when the evidence from Edinburgh, London and indeed the rest of Europe shows that isn’t the case.

1 week ago 3 0 1 0

Well, in the Netherlands the *median* cycle commute is something like 6km. In London, more like 8km. If anything, my analysis has been too conservative, but I wanted to centre it on what we know about people in Edinburgh who do shorter commutes.

1 week ago 2 0 1 0

I note that individual circumstance can affect how people choose to commute. All this analysis demonstrates is, based on the behaviour of neighbours, alternatives to driving are usually available - particularly within the bypass.

I think the 80th percentile is a reasonable upper boundary - changing it to the 60th percentile only has a marginal impact on the results, particularly when combined with public transport availability.

60 per cent of Edinburgh’s car commuters have an alternative available A typical Edinburgh car commuter is now spending close to £800 a year on fuel. Can they walk, cycle or take the bus instead?

For those commutes within Edinburgh's bypass, around 90% are short enough to cycle, and 80% have a public transport option available:

Up to 60% of car commutes to, from and within Edinburgh could be replaced by walking, cycling and public transport - based on commute distances and the behaviour of neighbours:

@jackrmcaldwell.bsky.social is this something you could raise at some point?

A reminder that the council do not collect any records of the location of parking offences. They collect no information about whether your reports are followed up (or even if they are seen by the contractor).

Cars ruin everything. Note the bin lorry unable to get past illegally-parked cars. When will this car sewer be fixed?

Nice to see works start yesterday on Elm Row to reinstate the bollards between the cycle lane & street (as well as the bollard at the pedestrian island behind the bus stop pictured left. cc @leithfeederride.bsky.social @spokes.org.uk @edi.bike

Elm Row update: bollards now protecting cycleway, but halfway point intended as pedestrian space is both being parked on, and also that parking is still encroaching on cycleway. Needs street furniture and / or bollards on sides & carriageway end, like this end area. /cc @jackrmcaldwell.bsky.social

5 minutes on the Edinburgh cycle network and this is what you can hear. Wrens were particularly noisy this morning - but no Goldfinches, Blue Tits or Blackbirds which I usually spot.

I'm using the Merlin Bird ID app, with my phone attached to my handlebar.

21 East Crosscauseway, built around 1778 on what is now a side street but was then the only paved road in the south of Edinburgh, which linked the city’s two main roads south. (The name comes an unfortunate anglicisation of the Scots word "causey", meaning "paved".)

Another casualty as another car hits another bus stop. Almost as if the real safety issue at bus stops isn’t the schemes to make them accessible for school kids to pass on bikes.

We have over 2,000 cyclists a day passing the Omni Centre bus stops - if they were as dangerous as some suggest then the paper would be full of stories of people getting badly injured. The same for Leith Walk - a significant *reduction* in pedestrian casualties now the trams and cycle lanes are in.

Final stats for the Omni Centre cycle lane in 2025: a slight 1% increase on 2024 with 580,000 journeys; a new record set of 2,265 cyclists on Friday, 7th November.

The significant increase in numbers in prior years came after the development of cycling infrastructure on Leith Walk.
