Lilith β€” Multnomah County Library Lilith β€” Marmery, Nikki, β€” In this feminist retelling of ancient creation myths, "Lilith and Adam are equal and happy in the Garden of Eden--until Adam decides Lilith should submit to his will and lie beneath him. She refuses--and is banished forever from Paradise. Demonized and sidelined, Lilith watches in fury as God creates Eve, the woman who accepts her submission. But Lilith has a secret: she has already tasted the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Endowed with wisdom, she knows why Asherah--God's wife and equal, the Queen of Heaven--is missing. Lilith has a plan: she will rescue Eve, find Asherah, restore balance to the world, and regain her rightful place in Paradise"--

Our patron requested "Female villain origin stories! Myth/fantasy. Just finished I, Medusa and have Stone Blind on my list." Here, we suggest Lilith by @nikkimarmery.bsky.social. #AskALibrarian

A fascinating and disappointing article here. As someone who did reissue a Gertrude Trevelyan novel, I can confirm it sold pretty well. It was never going to sell millions, but it's done nicely, thank you very much. We also had inquiries from international publishers wanting translation rights.

Ironically, Lilith tells us herself what happens when you ban words: β€œThey leap beyond those denouncing men. They soar above those who mock them from pulpits… They fly into the world and are read, discussed and debated. They reach those with open minds and breaking hearts.” 🐍🐍🐍

LILITH is a banned book - but she's used to that. She's been banned since the dawn of time for asking some VERY dangerous questions... What are you reading for #BannedBookWeek2025?

Thank god I was born too late to be an Excellent Woman - the single women who manage everything (unpaid, of course) in Pym’s 1952 novel, from parish jumble sales to soothing the marital troubles of more glamorous neighbours. Brilliant comic writing from Barbara Pym ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

LILITH as a #feminist manifesto? We love to see it πŸ’ͺ

Shout out to @peepmybookshelf for the iconic comparison, it stuck with us! We’ve pulled together some of our favourite quotes from the book that definitely give feminist manifesto energy

If you're interested in knowing more about Gertrude Eileen Trevelyan and her remarkable novels (four now available from @bhousepress.bsky.social), I invite you to watch the presentation I put together almost 5 years ago, before I had any hope of bringing her work back to print.

I’m glad these ladies survived! I saw them this week at the Ashmolean Museum along with this gorgeous pomegranate pot found in a house in Jerusalem, possibly abandoned after the Babylonian invasion.

Worship of Asherah was commonplace in the 1st millennium BC but increasingly suppressed after the Assyrian and Babylonian invasions. 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles record the reforms of monotheist kings Hezekiah and Josiah which destroyed Asherah poles, shrines and β€œdetestable idols”.

These are 2 of hundreds of 8th-7th BC terracotta goddess figures - likely Asherah, once consort of Yahweh - found from Ancient Israel and Judah. She is usually depicted with milk-heavy breasts and was probably kept in a household shrine.

I will once again be giving prizes* for book shop Father's Day displays that don't include Clarkson, WWII, arctic explorers, Stalingrad, or books that refer to the wife as "the war office."

And before you say that men don't read books - men who read books DO read books.

*in spirit anyway.

A gold coin with an image of an angel in armor slaying a dragon

A fifteenth-century gold Angel coin depicting the Archangel Michael, recovered from the wreck of the Mary Rose. This is an Edward IV version. Edward introduced the Angel to Britain in 1465, and different versions were minted until 1662. They were so iconic that many pubs were named after them

Please, if you have a Labour MP, write to them & ask why they are so determined to help rich Ai companies keep secret what copyrighted work they steal from creatives to make a profit. I mean everyone write to your Labour MP cos when they destroy our income, it takes money out of your local economy.
