Well, the probability of such a landslide is difficult to estimate, given that it's probability in time and space. But such events are not uncommon. It needs to be sufficiently large (here, a max. landslide depth of 150 m) to displace water that finally overtops.

Ok, next level. Simulating a landslide hitting a proglacial lake, producing a #GLOF. Note that the flood is (not yet) able to erode but just spills through two channels. In reality, the displacement wave would probably incise and widen the outflow channels, triggering a more severe flood downstream.

GraphFlood in TopoToolbox I have featured GraphFlood before (and here), but now it’s finally time to write about its MATLAB implementation. We had a very productive mini-hackathon today and one of the results is a bin…

GraphFlood is finally available in the MATLAB version of TopoToolbox. Check out my latest blog entry. Simulating steady flow has never been as easy as this.

Seafloor slopes control submarine canyon distribution: A global analysis Submarine canyon distribution is driven by slope inclination, linking tectonic and thermal forces to canyon formation.

Just out in Science Advances with @topotoolbox.bsky.social:
Submarine canyons preferentially form where the seafloor is steepest—not where rivers bring much sediment. Our global study reveals what controls canyon distribution and the world’s oceans.

Python TopoToolbox and GraphFlood Many have probably waited for this. And here we go. Let’s try out TopoToolbox’ Python version. Our aim will be to calculate flow depth along the Big Tujunga river and display the result…

Here's my first blog entry on using #TopoToolbox with #Python. See how to run Boris Gailleton's GraphFlood and display water depth along with a longitudinal river profile.

Recent observations and glacier modeling point towards near-complete glacier loss in western Austria (Ötztal and Stubai mountain range) if 1.5 °C is not met Abstract. Most glaciers in Austria are expected to disappear in the coming decades. The general trend to deglaciation is apparent from observations of past glacier change as well as projections of fut...

#TopoToolbox has a scale bar that you can add to some axes. Now, the scale bar also works with axes that represent geographical coordinates. Nice to see how the length of the scale bar changes once you pan northward.
