Quick visit to #LeonardJoel #Hawthorn with their upcoming online auction. Lots of pleasant paintings for a few hundred dollars (estimate) but my fave was $3-5,000 (William Beckwith McInnes). Big names keep their value (Clifton Pugh anyone, $20-30,000?) but Jorg Schmeisser’s etchings are cheap now…

Work visit to the #Swinburne #Hawthorn Late Lab building, by Kosloff Architecture, 2024, led by Julian Kosloff & Grace Winchester. Very impressive indeed, and a great example of ‘third place’ design that avoids using brand colours!

#DisneyPlus True Lies, 1994. Enjoyably silly action-comedy in James Bond mode, complete with quip-kills, still-impressive effects, & a splendid Jamie Lee Curtis. But Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cardboard, the casual misogyny, & the use of Islamic terrorists as comic cannon fodder are distinct negatives.

#DisneyPlus The Roses, 2025. A riff on the original story takes time to set up a loving couple then approaches their breakdown very gingerly. As over-erudite feuding Brits surrounded by bewildered Americans, Olivia Colman & Benedict Cumberbatch are extremely watchable but with almost no satire left.

#DisneyPlus Zootropia 2, 2025. Almost as fun as the first film, a beautifully animated story of police-bunny & -fox who disobey orders to pursue a bigger-than-Ben-Hur conspiracy. Both films reinforce positive policing, even when individuals go rogue: the ends justify the means, it seems.

#DisneyPlus War of the Roses, 1989. Danny Devito mischievously directs and has a juicy supporting role in a cautionary tale of an attractive couple (Michael Douglas & Kathleen Turner) who split up disastrously due to competitive materialism. So much schadenfreude, such a great movie.

#DisneyPlus Zootropia, 2016. Wonderful animated movie that uses the underdog-battles-barriers-and-exposes-unexpected-villain trope in a anthropomorphic animal world, so this time with a rookie police-bunny and a street hustler fox. Packed full of jokes and fun references, and quite a delight.

#SBSOnDemand Without a Clue, 1988. Mildly amusing take on the Sherlock Holmes thing (Dr Watson is the detecting genius who hires a ham actor to take the credit) but sadly not interesting or lively enough, and the starry cast is underused.

For architecture I think ‘Architecture: Form, Space and Order’ by Francis Ching is like a stream of fresh water for the brain. I’m also a big fan of Christopher Alexander’s ‘A Pattern Language’ for seeing the world in a different way.
Rabbit is delicious! I went to Malta on a side trip when last visiting Italy and rabbit’s their speciality, I ate it every night cooked in a different way.

#PrimeVideo Monkey Shines: An Experiment in Fear, 1988. George A Romero human-monkey mind-meld with creeping, consuming rage. Boring at first (good job Jason Beghe is easy on the eye) but builds momentum & becomes suspenseful (sad about the studio ending). Poster copied by The Monkey 37 years later!
