Eight centuries of stillness, and still the world comes to him. The Kamakura Daibutsu holds his meditative gaze above the crowd — pilgrims, tourists, schoolchildren — all briefly orbiting something far older than their reasons for being there. The stone stele reads 国宝鎌倉大仏, National Treasure, Great Buddha of Kamakura. The forested hill behind him has always been there. So, it seems, has he.
