STATEMENT ON RECENT ISLAMOPHOBIC ATTACKS ON THE SOUTH LONDON MUSLIM COMMUNITY
The Green Party stands in solidarity with the Muslim community, after the recent defacement of two mosques in South London. Fuelled by dangerous propaganda and acts of incitement by Elon Musk and UK far right figures, such hate filled vandalism has no place on our streets.
Prejudicial fake news retweets have predictably inspired Anti-Muslim graffiti. Foreign billionaires care little for the person who did the graffiti, or the community that they came from. But they do understand how profitable creating chaos in other countries can be. The rise of social media and its algorithms, completely shorn of checks and verifications, is super charging the radicalisation process and is a fundamental risk to our democracy which relies on judgement of informed voters.
These events have been building over time as politicians such as Nigel Farage, Robert Jenrick and Suella Braverman have deliberately and repeatedly targeted the Muslim community by using hateful rhetoric which resulted in a series of far-right riots across the UK in July and August of 2024.
As Londoners we will always reject this division.
We are proud of how Londoners stood in solidarity against the far-right riots in the summer. Our diversity is our strength and we will always stand TOGETHER AS ONE.
