He means it and there's a bit of urgency to it ... but not so much urgency that he's not prepared to declare the other basses around him a "brood of vipers" and demand that they tell him "who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" I mean, he's not so desperate that he's interested in sharing heaven with a bunch of uptight jerks. But he's desperate enough that the nice folk should get in. He probably doesn't look as crazed as we always seem to imagine that the real John the Baptist did.
