“Boo.” Neil swatted his hand through the air. All it did was disperse part of the apparition’s face. His head turned into cigarette tendrils before coming back together into an annoying smirk. “Oh, Nathaniel,” the ghost said, sarcastic, “can’t get rid of me.” Yet. Neil thought. He pointed to the ghost and said, “You’re Nathaniel.” He pointed to himself with his thumb. I’m Neil.” “We’re both you.” Nathaniel grabbed Neil’s finger and tilted it side to side. All right, he couldn’t touch the ghost but the ghost could touch him. “And if you’re not careful, we’ll both be me soon.”

Neil knows he’s been on a downward spiral since his mother died. He supposes the spiral has slowed to a crawl, but still…This time of year is always weird without her. He’d always followed her lead. He doesn’t know what to do without her—he never would. His phone vibrates with a text from Nicky. Happy Hanukkah Neil!<3 Then One N right???? Then texts from the others, one by one. “Answer them.” Andrew’s voice is muffled by the cocoon of blankets he’s got wrapped around him, but he must be tired of hearing it go off. Thanks, he texts back.

This one was inspired by Clarence brainstorming in the chat about what they thought of writing for this prompt

“Bravo!” Nicky yells, clapping at a speed and volume only a too-proud and involved father can achieve. Neil sighs. He finds Nicky in the back rows, wearing a headscarf and big sunglasses. Horrible disguise—he would have to talk to him about that and his penchant for disruption. Neil waves his hand dismissively at his students. “Everyone, take five.” He jumps down from the stage, Mari carefully taking the stairs to follow him. “Mari, don’t run.” Neil’s ignored as she runs up the aisle to Nicky’s waiting arms. “My little Christmas Star!” he coos, spinning her around as she shrieks gleefully.

Neil knocks on his neighbour’s door once. Then he knocks again, a fast rhythm, and only stops when the door is yanked away from him. “What,” Wymack says in greeting. Neil brandishes the bottle of cheap bourbon he’s brought with him. He eyes it suspiciously. “What’s a kid like you want with a scrooge like me now?” “It’s Christmas. You’re alone, I’m alone,” Neil says, almost in a sing-song. “Let me in, old man.” Wymack steps to the side and lets Neil through. “You can’t spend the night.” Neil ignores him because Wymack will let him stay, if he wants.

“You can’t hate peppermint,” Nicky says, incredulous. Neil wipes the grimace off his face and shrugs. “I can.” “And you can’t hate it in hot chocolate.” “This is hot cocoa,” Neil mumbles. He thinks he goes unheard. He’s unsure Nicky is interested in the difference between them. Maybe he’ll force an education on him—Mme Beauvais certainly would be up for it. Nicky takes the mug from Neil and cradles it to his chest. “You don’t deserve this.” “I hate marshmallows too,” Neil adds for good measure. Nicky hisses at him, and Neil almost laughs at the absurdity of his reaction.
