#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of Metric at the Annex in Madison. This was a real "I saw them when" show, a banger of a set in a venue that was already too small for their sound. They got bigger, but their style was everywhere for the next few years.
Lil Jon's "Snap Yo' Fingers" was released #20yearsagotoday. The song was originally slated for his solo debut but was shelved. Later featured on "Crunk Hits, Vol. 2," the song shot up the charts, peaking at #7 on the Hot 100. The song is certified platinum in the US and New Zealand.

#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of Centro-matic at the King Club in Madison. It was an odd show in that I love the album they were touring but otherwise don't really care about them; this was one of my top songs of 06. Very homey, chill vibe for this set in the darkness of the King Club.
#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of Maritime playing at Club 770 for the Madison PopFest. They were reigning as Wisconsin's best band at that point, and this set was a highlight of the fest, which was itself a highlight of Madison's calendar the couple years it ran.
James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" was the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 #20yearsagotoday. The third single from Blunt's debut album, it went 4x platinum in the US alone and was nominated for three Grammys.

#20YearsAgoToday I shot this clip of Jenny Lewis in Milwaukee. The show was amazing, a kind of secular revivalist revue that showed how her solo debut made a left turn from the blog rock era and killed Rilo Kiley. The album remains a classic, but she's only made a handful of songs I like since then.
"Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog" was the #1 book on nonfiction The New York Times Best Seller List #20yearsagotoday. The book was the basis for the 2008 film of the same name.

#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of Nada Surf at the Annex in Madison. I wasn't a huge fan of them, but they played for two full hours(!), including an eight-song encore(!), and I didn't get tired of it, so maybe I was?
#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of the New Pornographers in Madison (it was a busy February). This show had been postponed because of illness, and by the time it came back around it was sans Neko Case. I recall it being a bit disappointing, maybe because Twin Cinema took a while to click with me.

#20YearsAgoToday plus one day, I shot this clip of Andrew Bird in Madison. 2006 was a weird time, when a violinist/whistler could become one of the hottest tickets in a city full of townies and hipsters. The show was captivating, but I never could get deeply into Bird's music.
#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of Motion City Soundtrack in Milwaukee. This was the largest venue I'd seen them in and it delivered. The energy was huge, as seen in this clip. I didn't see them again for ten years, on their "last" tour, and not again for another ten, just a couple weeks ago.
#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of Nine Inch Nails in Milwaukee. This was an unbelievable show! I think this is the last time I was in the pit at a big show like this, and from the start the energy was turned all the way up. The shots were all shaky, but they reflect the show very well.
"Arrested Development" ended its three season run on Fox #20yearsagotoday. The show, which was acclaimed by critics, was never a ratings success. Netflix picked up the series in 2013 and produced two seasons before finally canceling the series in 2019.

#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of Feist in Madison. This was a hot ticket and a hell of a set โ I had no idea what to expect of her show, but it was a lot more lively than I'd've guessed, even while being largely solo. Here, though, she was joined by her opener, Jason Collett, and his band.
#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of the Heligoats, the solo project from Chris Otepka of Troubled Hubble. This was a solo acoustic show at Indie Coffee in Madison, just after TH broke up, opening for a solo acoustic set by Jason Anderson of Wolf Colonel. /1

#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of the Dials at High Noon Saloon in Madison. They were part of a diverse mid to late 00s Chicago scene, with a sound kind of like Bikini Kill filtered through the Ramones. They played Madison fairly frequently for a few years, but broke up after only two albums.

#20YearsAgoToday, I shot this clip of Murder By Death at Club 770 in Madison. The room overflowed for a dark-folk rock act that I'd discovered a year earlier in the middle of a five-band Thursday show. Their set was both musically and visually dark, so the video's not great. 2006 clips coming soon!
#20YearsAgoToday I recorded this clip of Thunderbirds Are Now! at a raucous Halloween weekend show in Madison, headlined by the Hold Steady. One of the best shows I've ever been to, despite not really liking the Constantines, who played in between. Unalloyed Madison Halloween energy.
"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" was released in the United States #20yearsagotoday. Despite barely breaking even, the film was a critical success. Featuring Val Kilmer and Michelle Monahan and directed by Shane Black, the movie also marked a career resurgence for Robert Downey, Jr.
