1/2 At #22MSP, as part of the ICBL @minefreeworld.bsky.social, we remind States Parties: Educating civilians about mine dangers is a core legal duty under Art. 5 of the #MineBanTreaty. Yet in 2024, only 2% of global mine action funding went to risk education.
We need more financial commitment – now!

Victim Assistance: Comparing best practices from long-term projects in Colombia with recent findings from the crisis context in Ukraine The Mine Ban Treaty recognize victim assistance (VA) as both a core obligation and a humanitarian priority. Colombia has made notable progress in reforming its laws and policies, developing long-term, inclusive, and community-based VA approaches shaped by its experience with internal conflict. In contrast, Ukraine faces a rapidly evolving challenge as ongoing hostilities create new contamination and victim assistance needs. Emerging evidence from Ukraine highlights both difficulties and innovative responses that may guide future best practices. This side event aims to discuss both challenging and inspiring examples from Ukraine and Colombia with the aim to strengthen Victim Assistance through inclusive, non-discriminatory strategies, fostering coordination, survivor participation, and sustainable, rights-based support. At this week’s #22MSP of the @MineBanTreaty, the EU welcomed the Marshall Islands and Tonga as new States Parties and thanked Japan’s Presidency, the ISU and the Special Envoys for advancing universalisation.
The EU stays committed to mine action and a mine-free world.
#Children have made up over 40% of all civilian casualties from #landmines and explosive remnants of war since 1999.
