The patient's husband called me a few days later to thank me & tell me his kids (9 & 6yr old) now want to be either a doctor/nurse when they grow up. We are not often able to say that families of a patient who died in the #ICU walk away with good memories, so this felt really nice. #3wishesprogram

At this week's #D&Iconference, I met someone who told me the #3wishesprogram didn't last beyond a pilot at her hospital bc they felt there wasn't enough efficacy data. At a diff conference last year, I was asked why I was doing this research, bc isn't it obvious that acts of kindness are kind?
Sigh.

He knew his time was near & when told about the #3WishesProgram, he requested what he called a "reverse funeral"--an occasion for his friends & family to gather, for him to hear their speeches about him, & eat his favorite foods. How did the event go? I think his smile says it all (shared w/ perm.)

A patient on inpatient hospice lamented that she missed her life of going to plays and musicals. After some phonecalls, the #3WishesProgram was able to arrange for a live musical performance in her room by students at an acting school.

These handmolds take a considerable amount of time and effort, and we are so grateful for the #nurses who offer making them for dying patients and their loved ones. The details they capture are incredible: often rings, wrinkles, showing that one hand is fading away...

An #ICU #nurse was heartbroken that two young children were losing their beloved mother. She personalized these blankets with their mother's handprint to symbolize that their mother will always be hold them close, no matter where she'll be. #kindness #3wishesprogram

When given a piece of paper to write down thoughts about their dying loved one, the family had so much to say. Our research assistant thoughtfully put it all in a bouquet for them to cherish. #3WishesProgram #medsky

This is a #3wishesprogram fingerprint painting. A dying patient's fingerprints were collected on a blank piece of paper and volunteer artist incorporated the fingerprints into a beautiful painting of purplish-blue flowers. This gift is then sent to the patient's family.

14 teddy bears with sound boxes that play the heart rhythm of a now deceased loved one.

We are mailing FOURTEEN teddy bears to family members of #3WishesProgram patients today. Each plush contains the recording of a deceased patient's heartbeat that was recorded by a #nurse, looped & edited by our music therapist, & transferred to a soundbox by our project manager.

Just got back from LA General Medical Center and learned that they are incorporating whether the patient is "eligible for the #3WishesProgram" during #nursing presentations of the A-F Bundle during #ICU rounds. How cool is that? #Humanism in the #ICU is so important.
