Me standing in silhouette against the sunset on the ice surface of a frozen lake, waving a flag to protect the camera from the direct light of the sun (and to look more epic). As the low sun shines through high cloud there is a sun-dog off to the right of the image. This spot was in the middle of a lake on all my other visits to Greenland, but on this occasion, with overnight temperature dipping below -30C (30 degrees below freezing) there was no liquid water anywhere in the vicinity and all the lakes, rivers etc were frozen.
My tent, with the frozen lake behind. Pretty much in the middle of nowhere.
Field assistant: hated the trip, hated me, hated the work, hated everything, as far as I could tell. I have to admit that the conditions were not comfortable.
Me for scale at the front of the ice, standing on the frozen proglacial river.
40 years ago today (11 April 1986) I was wild camping in pretty cold conditions in #Greenland, as part of my PhD programme. Looking at the field diary I think the photo of me on a frozen lake is from that specific day, others are from same trip. see ALT text. What were you doing #40YearsAgoToday?
