The castle in “Wards of Witching Ways” (published in Dungeon 11 in 1988) was inspired by an Alan Lee illustration in Castles (1984), which Santa gave me for Christmas in 1985. #50YearsOfDnD

One of my all-time favorite projects to work on was Mines of Madness (2013), a 5E-compatible D&D adventure that Scott Kurtz and I created for sh*ts and giggles. Scott came up with the plot and the illustrations; I did the writing and the maps. It’s now roaming free on the internet. #50YearsOfDnD
I'll never forget Lisa Smedman's take on the Dancing Hut in 2e, with the killer cyborg ghost, a fight against Godzilla in mini-Tokyo, & the "welcome to your own intestines" death hallway. #50YearsofDnD
Baba Yaga’s dancing hut was first explored in “The Dancing Hut,” an AD&D adventure in Dragon 83. One of the things you can find in the hut is a Soviet tank—further evidence that D&D embraces weirdness! In my expert opinion, you should ignore the part about the tank not being operable. #50YearsOfDnD
The Dungeon Master’s Kit (4E) and the Reavers of Harkenwold adventure booklets.
One of my favorite D&D adventures is Reavers of Harkenwold. It appeared in the 4E Dungeon Master’s Kit and was made by the same folks who created Lost Mine of Phandelver. Like Phandalin, Harkenwold is an awesome starter setting. It would be fun to update it for 5E. #50YearsOfDnD #dnd
Fun fact: Asmodeus was going to be the main villain of Dragon Heist, whose plot entailed devils taking over Waterdeep, setting up a Blood War-like conflict with demons in the Underdark. Although that plot had to be scrapped, bits of it showed up 1 year later in Descent into Avernus. #50YearsOfDnD
The Falling Star, released by Wizkids as a minis-scale model in 2019, was based on a map I drew in 1989. #50YearsOfDnD

This illo is by William O’Connor, one of the lead illustrators of #dnd 4E. Bill passed away years ago, but his illo lives on in the revised 5E Dungeon Master’s Guide (2024). #50YearsOfDnD
