Part of a golden retriever's face is shown in the lower-left corner, with a single eye prominent. She wants you to know she is a good girl since she's lying down on the sidewalk at her owner's feet, and stays even when people walk by.

A vibrant yellow sunflower with a dark brown center stands in the lower left corner against a brilliant deep blue sky. Scattered white, fluffy clouds are visible in the upper part of the frame, particularly on the right side. The sun is shining directly on the sunflower, making its petals glow.

Week 30/52: This week's prompt from the 52Frames weekly photo challenge: Unusual Crop.

Sunflower from my garden placed in the corner of the shot to contrast with the sunny, blue sky.

A high-contrast black-and-white photograph explores the theme of “Unusual Crop” through stark minimalism and emotional ambiguity. Dominating the frame is a rough asphalt surface, its texture captured in sharp detail, each grain of gravel catching the light. The surface feels immense, almost oppressive in its scale, until the viewer’s eye is drawn to the top right corner where the partial face of a white dog lies still against the pavement. Only the dog’s snout, closed eye, and a hint of an ear are visible, cropped abruptly by the edge of the frame. The composition suggests a state of calm, sleep, or possibly vulnerability, but the mystery remains deliberately unresolved. A thick, dark diagonal shadow cuts across the lower third of the image, adding a visual boundary that contrasts sharply with the light-toned fur and textured ground. The unusual cropping confronts the viewer with a tension between what is shown and what is withheld, between intimacy and isolation. The photograph plays with perception and narrative, inviting questions: Is the dog merely resting? Is the perspective symbolic or unsettling? By offering only a fragment of the subject, the image evokes unease, curiosity, and contemplation, transforming an ordinary street moment into something poetic, abstract, and emotionally charged.

Week #30 of 52Frames: Unusual Crop!

As often, I went with a minimalist (and somewhat brutalist) approach and a film noir style for this photo.

52Frames: Unusual Crop: Cat Eye. As per usual, I didn't set out to use Smith for this task, but I didn't like how the other subjects turned out. Who's watching who?

Detail of a Leopard Frog's eye. The eye fills the frame, showing golden metallic flecks in the iris and surrounding skin. The frog's skin is mottled green, red and black.

For this week's #52frames submission the topic was #52Frames_unusualcrop. I stayed with my #macrophotography experimentation and submitted a 'crop focused on details'.

Normally, I would have centered the flower and did some post production work in Photoshop but the 52 Frames challenge was an 'Unusual Crop' which only allowed editing when taking the photo. #52Frames_unusualcrop

Cropping to the edge of recognition, a sunflower becomes shape and motion. Golden wings against a teal sky—more gesture than flower, more flight than still life.

A lot of the pics I tried for this week's challenge ended up looking like a missed shot instead of an intentional crop. I think this is as close as I'll get.

During a misty morning on the central Oregon coast, I found dew drops on a daisy. To emphasize the dew drops I opened the lens and offset the daisy.
