#5SecondMovieReview : "Fido" (2006)

Comedy / horror with a bit of romance, which is difficult to pull off successfully, but it's a delight when it is - as it is here. It's also a subtle but biting satire. Fantastic cast, quirky characters, all aided by being a Canadian production.

Very […]

#5SecondMovieReview : "Novocaine" (2025)

Action / dark comedy / drama / thriller. It's good and different. Great cast. See it.

#5SecondMovieReview : "The Ballad of Wallis Island" (2025)

Tiny but fantastic cast, one setting, touching, funny, and warm - see it. Note: you may have the urge to kill the character 'Charles' for the duration of the movie.

#5SecondMovieReview : "Weirdsville" (2007)

If this didn't have you at "satanic yuppie cannibal cult", I'm not sure I can help you. Incredibly funny Canadian movie with Taryn Manning and the incomparable Matt Frewer in a supporting role. It's excellent; see it.

I mentioned this movie once […]

#5SecondMovieReview : "Hayseed" (2023)

A comedy / murder mystery whodunit, which can be tricky to pull off, but they got the balance right here. It's excellent; see it.

It's in a small-town setting and feels very #Canadian, though it isn't. If you liked Corner Gas or Kids in the Hall: Death […]

#5SecondMovieReview : "The Gorge" (2025)

Not perfect, but very good. See it.

It also breaks my rule about the more genres associated with a movie, the worse it is. This one is listed as "action, adventure, horror, romance, scifi" but doesn't fall into that trap.

I occasionally post what I call a #5SecondMovieReview - essentially a quick yes/no recommendation with no spoilers. I try to highlight stuff that you may not have run into or seen ads for, at least some of the time.

This doesn't fit that mould, because I actually want to describe the content of […]

5 second movie review: "Black Bag" (2025)

Excellent; see it. A film for adults, which Hollywood normally studiously avoids doing these days.

5 second movie review: A Working Man (2025)

It won't change your life, but it does what it says on the tin. If you like action/vengeance, see it.

A screen capture from a fictional television documentary featured in the movie "Late Night with the Devil" (2023).

It shows an open-reel tape recorder (aka reel-to-reel) with a tape loaded on it. The scene this is taken from shows the playback of the tape. The tape unspools from the left-hand supply reel counter-clockwise normally, but the takeup reel on the right-hand side turns clockwise, with the tape passing to the left of the center axis of the reel.

I'm not aware of any decks that actually work this way. There are other oddities too, like no tension arm on the supply side, an apparent tension arm on the takeup side but which is not actually in the tape path, and various other weirdnesses.

We watched "Late Night with the Devil" (2023) tonight. I posted a #5SecondMovieReview of it earlier. We enjoyed it.

However... one little thing about it is nagging at me, like a splinter in the mind's eye.

It's a period piece, set in the #1970s. The major […]

Thanks for the reminder; I'd been meaning to watch this, so my partner and I just did.

Review: It's good. Watch it.

5-second movie review...

Just watched Me, Myself, & the Void (2023). It's fantastic. Watch it. Completely unrelated to but reminds me of Dave Made a Maze (2017) [1] stylistically.

[1] This is also fantastic. See it.
