Are you talking about D&D? It would be clearer if you said what game you were talking about instead of contributing to the TTRPG = D&D issues.
Keen to hear your views on #5thEd Ars Magica, Hero System, and Pendragon
Can I just remind people that today I was musing about how incredibly successful #5thEd has been to remain essentially unchanged for over decade. I was trying to be positive.

Playing old school #5thEd
My thoughts today are about #5thEd which is something I know little about. I get the basics but never bothered growing all the bells and whistles. (I consider it the 3rd Ed. Of D20 myself but that’s just me being old and pedantic.)

…..PCs have lots of options (don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it…!) like #5thEd (damn! Said it) this can take a long time and seem tedious.
Hence the interminable on-line post about reading up on your spells and being ready to go when the Referee comes to you. Or complaints about….

…inflated pig’s bladder around than their are TTRPG players. Far more people who’ll sit at a riverside dipping lines into to water waiting, waiting, waiting for fish they’ll either never catch or will just throw back.
That’s before you cross off all the #5thEd players. And the ones….

Ta for the offer but I don’t drive. So it’s public transport.
There’s a club 5mins up the road I used to go to before Covid, but I was thinking of leaving it anyway because I’d been trapped on a #5thEd table.
The one I’m trying to go to is in the City Centre. I think it’ll be fine. Eventually.

But when I get to Stabcon (Early July) I’m thinking it might be nice to Referee a couple of games rather than just be a player.
So the plan is to try and get match fit through a local club. I’ve arranged to go to a club in Digbeth tonight where someone is running a 4th level #5thEd one-shot.

* a discussion for another day.
I asked all players to roll their attack rolls simultaneously and only tell me when they’d hit and the damage they did.
You have never seen faster D&D-type combat. I loved it! (It might not suit everyone, but to me it’s the antithesis of #5thEd et al.)

There are some genres #5thED shouldn’t be adapted to. Added to that Everyday Heroes is a pretty cack-handed job.
There’s railroads and there’s “this is what happens, this is what you do, roll these dice” over and over again. Another over a pint in the pub rant.
The other players were nice.

….trying to give players the same experience of challenge and jeopardy at higher levels to that they experienced at lower levels can distort the immersion and lead to issues like attritional combat.
#5thED - IMHO - tried to solve this be starting everyone off as Superheroes.

A whole bunch of Referees all running Conclave games in myriad systems. I mean you could even get some of the Wildebeest herd to run a game using #5thED rules. (I still remember the analogy @omnihedron.co.uk.)
But what we’d need is a “pop-up” convention. Using the Concrete Cow chassis.

You can offer to facilitate a game like Fiasco or Microscope. You can offer to run the latest hot quick starter.
You don’t have to plan your own scenarios or design your own pregens. PFS is built for this.
(I’m completely unaware what the current #5thEd, #5.5thEd equivalent is for PFS.)

(Look at me, sounding as if I’ve got wide experience with purchased stuff!)
I was particularly stung by #5thEd Mines of Pandelver. I found the pregen sheets full of too many bells and whistles too many of which seemed to subtle adverts for the full version of the rules.
If I ever look at…

See also “pro. Referees” & the rise of people paying people to Referee for them on line.
I absolutely agree that the phenomenal rise of Critical Role during COVID plays into this but it seems to go hand-in-hand with the service-provider/client model which seems built into #5thEd. IMHO.
(3/fin)
Nope.
I haven’t read #5thEd apart from the limited free rules which I downloaded. But I have watched convincing on-line analyses that argue the structure of 5thEd vs. Earlier versions of #DnD puts the emphasis on what you can do/what you will be offered by your referee in the players handbook (1/3)
Nope.
#DnD is not #5thEd and vice versa. I’ll keep using different tags. Ta!
(I DO use #DnD when appropriate).
And I won’t use something like #5thEdDnD. Everyone knows which game #5thEd refers to. It made me laugh how other games started rushing out new “editions” just to get to…..

C) Was/Is there a shortage of #5thEd Referees in the UK?
D) Was/Is there a shortage of Referees for other games in the US?
E) What’s the situation with Pathfinder Refs? My experience was that there was no shortage in the UK because they LOVED getting “accredited” as an official Referee.

Random thoughts/questions about Refereeing.
A) Is it an addiction? I know when I was playing I really, really, really wanted to Referee.
B) #5thEd by turning the Referee into the servant/service provider of the client players created a shortage of Referees in the US. Right?

Still, adapt, adopt, improve. At least this would give me a chance to play a few weeks of #5thEd and, maybe, get to like it a bit better.
The Ref was young and talented. Clearly a massive brain and a facility for accents. Clearly lots of what I’m going to say will reflect back on her but…

An experience with #5thEd
As I said yesterday, the club I was attending had come to the end of its current cycle of games. I’d just come off running a Superhero campaign which had gone well.
(I can find the weekly blog I keep of it if anyone’s interested.)

But that left me to find a game as a player for 12 weeks. With limited choice left.
I got into a #5thEd game. Well, a chance learn it at last and it was only for a few months.
(More on this game later.)
Except by the next mixup NO-ONE was changing tables. The club had “set”.

….the one true way. (Plus the last #5thEd campaign I was trapped in until COVID saved me, plus an introduction to a one-off Superhero session where the background intro took half the evening - it seemed.)
I’ve written, run and published rail-roady stuff.

Has recent development of #DnD (eg. #5thED) veered more towards developing the individual PCs ability to survive (everyone has magic) rather than their ability to contribute to a group?
I remember when I first found out about D&D one of its major appeals was that it was a co-operative game

I know the feeling. Which i why I downloaded the #5thEd free rules and bought The Lost Mines of Phandelver starter set.
If someone came to my table asking for a one-hour demo but requested “proper D&D” I was ready……..
(I thought.)
Through my Choose Your Adventure one hour demos I’ve introduced loads of people to #TTRPG. I’d guess the age range is c.8 to 70. All genders. People are very open to play for different reasons (parents with their children for example.)
I personally have found #5thEd hard to Grok.

That’s like #TTRPGs that ENABLE you to play a specific genre/setting/ouvre perfectly. #5thEd for example or a Steampunk game that gives you rules to build whatever device you want.
DR WHO - right from the off, (British) writers had no limits.
