A page from the book 642 Things To Draw. At the top, the printed prompt “a Beatles song.“ The drawing, in monochrome brush pen, is the exterior of a small stone church with a pointed arch door. There are bare trees, a wire fence, some shrubs and a smattering of gravestones off to one side of the building. On the pathway leading to the open door stands a bald man in priests’ clothing holding a Bible and looking at the watch on his wrist. No one else is present. Inside the church, between the rows of empty pews and the altar is a casket. On the outside wall by the door is a sign. It says, from top to bottom, “St. Agnes Church; 11:00 Wedding; 2:00 Rigby Funeral; J. Mackenzie, Pastor.” I you look for them, you might notice grains of rice on the path as well.

In the middle panel for the printed prompt “a bed,” there’s a fine line and colored pencil drawing of our bed as it appeared in the house in San Francisco — the white panel door I made into a headboard, the pale green comforter, mismatched sheets and pillows, the nightstand full of books, papers, the coffee carafe, and curled up asleep in the middle of the bed, that pit-mix dog. Pretty much everything that’s there in the drawing with the exception of the window in that house with its pull-down shade is just as it appears today in Sacramento seven years or so since I drew it. On the bottom panel, for the prompt, “a bar of music,” I’ve drawn that literal thing — one measure of music, key of B flat major, in 4/4 time, with a simple melody on the treble clef staff and three-part harmony on the bass.
