Les opérateurs exigent la bande des 6 GHz pour la 6G, et le font savoir à l’UE Alors que la 5G Stand Alone commence à peine à trouver son chemin en France avec Free puis Orange (et encore, ne la cherchez pas pour le moment sur iPhone, son utilisation demande une mise à jour), les opérateurs préparent déjà l’arrivée de la prochaine norme de communications mobiles... la 6G. Et comme le rapporte Univers Freebox, les fournisseurs européens veulent avant tout encore plus de fréquences. La bande est déjà bien utilisée par le wi-fi 6E, et les opérateurs comptent bien limiter la casse. Capture MacGeneration. C’est par un courrier aux autorités de régulation européennes que 12 opérateurs dont Orange, Deutsche Telekom, TIM ou encore Vodafone ont fait état d’une exigence en vue de déployer le prochain réseau mobile : l’attribution complète de la bande des 6 GHz aux opérateurs mobiles. Pour appuyer leur demande, ces derniers rappellent au régulateur que les USA et la Chine ont déjà ouvert cette bande de fréquence aux appareils mobiles, en 2020 et 2023 respectivement. Selon eux, la prochaine norme utilisant des blocs de 200 MHz, un minimum de 600 MHz dédiés est une obligation, sans quoi la norme ne servira pas à grand chose, et l’Europe se retrouverait donc à la traîne face aux deux géants. Les opérateurs forcent d’autant plus la main qu’ils ont peur qu’une partie de ces fréquences ne leur passe sous le nez, les fabricants de matériel wi-fi lorgnant déjà sur le haut de ce spectre, déjà occupé par une partie du wi-fi 6E. Le moment de ces doléances n’est pas non plus anodin, le Radio Spectrum Policy Group de l’Union européenne devant adopter d’ici juin une position préliminaire sur l’utilisation de la bande des 6 GHz. Pour finir d’influencer les décideurs publics, les opérateurs mobiles tentent de jouer sur l’appellation commerciale, susurrant que 6 GHz et 6G, ça va tellement bien ensemble, qu’il serait dommage de ne pas les marier...
