Today, Sep 14th, is the 24th anniversary of one of the more remarkable events to take place in the days following the September 11th terrorist attacks. I like to refer to it as Barbara Lee Day. A reminder of one of the most remarkable and courageous votes in recent US political history.

The flag of our fathers Explaining why he made Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg told an interviewer, “The most important thing about this picture is that I got to make a movie about a time that my dad flourished in.” During the Vietnam War, Spielberg explained, he resented people like his father who were proud to be American and displayed the flag. “Only when I became older did I begin to understand my dad’s generation,” Spielberg said. “I went from resenting the American flag to thanking it.” That American flag receives loving treatment in Saving Private Ryan’s opening moments, when it stiffly, proudly flutters across the screen. In fact, the flag, which had become a legendary culture war symbol after being torched during Vietnam protests, enjoys an earnest revival throughout the literature of the WWII nostalgia. In Flags of Our Fathers, James Bradley writes that the image of his father and his fellow soldiers raising the flag at Iwo Jima “transported many thousands of anxious, grieving, and war-weary Americans into a radiant state of mind: a kind of sacred realm, where faith, patriotism, mythic history, and the simple capacity to hope intermingled.”
On this week of the #911Anniversary, we are reflecting on this piece, from 2006, in which @chrislhayes.bsky.social unpacked how the Greatest Generation helped pave the road to Baghdad through #WW2 nostalgia, laying the conceptual groundwork for what was to come.

Yesterday's tragedy and today's solemn anniversary BOTH make one thing perfectly clear. That throughout our history, when it has seemed that Evil, Hatred and Discord have won. That the better angels of our nature have always prevailed. Always! 🙏 #911Anniversary #CharlieKirkshot

Twenty-four years ago, the world was in shock after the attacks on the Twin Towers, but in those dark moments, I suggest heroes that saved the lives of hundreds of people.
In memory of the 2,996 people who perished on that dark day.

When we were producing LONG SHADOW: 9/11's LINGERING QUESTIONS, I was always blown away by @vermontgmg.bsky.social's encyclopedic knowledge of the September 11.
This small anecdote always stuck with me. I hope you'll give it and the whole podcast a listen.
