Hello California! 👋 I loved sharing the power of generative AI with educators at ABC Unified’s EdTech Symposium today! Connected with new friends and reunited with my EdTech family!🦄

Humans are better than robots
The school is the heart of the community. They need to be hubs of humanity rather than a training center for tasks that compete with robots.

Using Google Gemini I can definitely save time. Get more done in a smaller amount of time. This allows me to do other things also!

Ultimately… we are not in the business of robot training. Following steps is what robots can do, how do we help students to be decision makers who critically analyze the world around them? "Critical thinking is the ability to question, analyze, and solve problems in innovative ways. It’s not about memorizing answers or following predetermined steps—it’s about teaching students to evaluate information, draw connections, and create solutions for complex challenges. Let’s help students ask: Why is this important? What’s the best approach? How does this connect to the real world?" AI can crunch data, but it can’t think critically about the world we live in. That’s why students need teachers to guide them beyond the obvious, to explore the why and how.
How much figure it out is there? If students are following steps it is low critical thinking and possibly something that can be automated or done through Generative AI. How do we help students to analyze and revise?
#ABCIGNITE
Use real-world scenarios and current events to discuss ethical dilemmas and how choices impact others. Example: Host a mock town hall meeting where students debate policies that affect their community.
Just because we can doesn't mean we should. How do our actions impact others? What ethical considerations are students considering and debating?
#ABCIGNITE
tool robot. How do we create meaningful connections.
Who is Bob and why is he carrying 40 watermelons? What issues in the community are students tackling?
#ABCIGNITE
Allow students to express their learning through art, music, poetry, or storytelling. Example: Assign a “community story project” where students create multimedia presentations about their neighborhoods.
Generative AI is looking for patterns, not creating new ideas. How do we help students to develop creative thinking as a norm in our classrooms?
#ABCIGNITE
Partner with local businesses, leaders, and organizations to show how classroom learning applies to real-world settings. Example: Organize field trips or invite community members to share their expertise in class.
How does today's lesson help students to feel connected to their community?
#ABCIGNITE
Use classroom discussions, literature, and role-playing to explore diverse perspectives. Example: Have students write from someone else’s point of view in a journal or act out a scenario that builds understanding of different experiences.
How do our lessons help students with EMPATHY?! (Even in math class)
#ABCIGNITE
Gemini the capacity for empathy, creative expression, critical reflection, and the pursuit of meaning.
Gemini answered "the capacity for empathy, creative expression, critical reflection, and the pursuit of meaning. "
Do our lessons center these ideas?

stack of worksheets
Sadly, too many AI tools don't innovate what is possible. They are making faster worksheets... but how is it CONNECTING LEARNERS? Making Creators? Community builders? World Changers? Analyzers?

robot filling out paper
Filling out paper is for robots... when this is automated, what can our students do to go further?

are students competing with calculators
Technology has solved the problem of “Write a letter to your congressman” and even “Write a spreadsheet formula.” We first need to identify what technology and AI can do WELL. We don’t need students who are great at competing with calculators (or computers). We need GREAT HUMAN BEINGS

Automate the mundane humanize the complex
Use technology to automate the mundane!
School should be about the human experience!
How do we SHIFT what we do in schools to help make school more humanizing rather than robotic?
#ABCIGNITE
The future will not be button pushing. Will technology allow us to spend less hours working? I doubt it, but it should free up the time we spend button pushing and doing paperwork to work on more complex tasks.

Throughout history, technology shifts what we spend time on.
As teachers, what is the shift for what we spend time on?

article headline says no teachers
So here we are. AI is everywhere and the Jetsons of the future is coming to fruition. Will AI replace teachers? Is this good for kids?

Robot teacher
With Google Gemini and AI built into our Gmail, Google Docs, and other tools...
How does that change the role of the teacher?
#ABCIGNITE
63 years ago the Jetsons predicted that the teacher would be a robot! Notice how the robot teacher is interacting with the children using natural language. Was AI teachers predicted in the 1960's?
