In an interview with the Albertan rec, Sylvestre, chief executive officer for the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), claimed at least 25 booked meetings for his pro-sovereignty movement and the APP-sponsored Alberta First Pension Plan initiative, have been cancelled due to pressure from sovereignty opponents across the country. "This is a very organized thing. They do this on purpose to make it hard for us to. The one thing they cannot control is grassroots politics. That's why we're playing that game," said Sylvestre. "They cannot control our meetings "What's said in our meetings and what our people are hearing is completely destructive to their side of this narrative." Since Sylvestre was authorized in early January by Elections Alberta to proceed with signatures with its petition drive to separate from Canada, separatists have encountered numerous challenges with locking down venues to meet. Sylvestre's referendum question is asking eligible Albertans 'Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?' Separatists have until May 2 (120 days) to gather at least 177,732 valid signatures from eligible Alberta voters for it to legally proceed to the referendum phase However, the group formed to conduct the canvassing -- Stay Free Alberta -- was forced to cancel meetings at least twice in recent weeks, including at the Castor Legion Hall, located 178 kilometres east of Innisfail. The Castor meeting on Jan. 15 was moved 14 kilometres east to the Fleet Hall. Wally Genz, manager of Innisfail's Royal Canadian Legion Branch #104, told the Albertan his branch will not host or support meetings or petition activities for Stay Free Alberta, the Forever Canadian movement, the Alberta NDP or any political group. He said this decision is in line with the Royal Canadian Legion's national policy requiring political neutrality "We honour the sacrifices of our Canadian Armed Forces and Veterans - who served collectively for all of Canada - which secured our sovereignty, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the liberties we enjoy today," said Genz noting the local legion did not consent to a request last fall from local Forever Canadian volunteers to set up a petition booth on legion property. "Out of respect for that service, the Royal Canadian Legion, especially Branch 104, remains focused on remembrance, veteran support, and community service, not political activity." Meanwhile in Edmonton on Jan. 12 Canadian Brewhouse cancelled a separatist gathering that was scheduled for that evening. "Canadian Brewhouse can confirm that this event is not taking place," said a company social media post. "We did not approve, host, or partner with this event, and our name and location were used without our knowledge or authorization
"Canadian Brewhouse does not take political positions and remains committed to being an inclusive and welcoming space for all." Despite the many rejections, Sylvestre said APP and its followers remain determined. "We just keep trying until we get we get a 'yes," he said. "We have people looking into that. We have certain places that you know that that won't host us and told us clearly that they won't host us, so we just move to a different place. "We`re able to flip into another location quite easily. It only delays us 12 hours, basically," he said, adding it's "fair" for the legion not to open up its venues for partisan political groups. "I don't have a problem with that. Those guys that are involved with the legion actually have a lot of space in my world. 'They're the guys that that actually went somewhere and got shot after what they believe in," he added. "We're more than happy to accommodate what they're comfortable with." In the meantime, provincial pro-Canada forces are busy organizing for what they fully expect will be a referendum call by the provincial government this coming fall. "We have just finished recognizing all of our volunteers. We sent out over 6,000 certificates to our volunteers for their great work so far, said Thomas Lukaszuk, leader of the Forever Canada petition movement that garnered more than 450,000 signatures provincewide in just three months last fall. Most importantly, said Lukaszuk, the thousands of volunteers will soon be mobilized following the launch of his referendum campaign within "the next couple of weeks. "These campaigns are massive, probably will be the one of the biggest campaigns in the history of this province," he said, adding fundraising has already begun.
