In honor of today's #CALeg special election in Riverside Co's #AD63, here's an election thought:
These days, we're used to primaries in March or June. But back in 1944, we had a much more compact election season with the primary in August & the general in early November.
Tomorrow we have a special election in California's #AD63, a Trump+13 seat in western Riverside County. This has been a pretty solidly Republican district in the Inland Empire, but the Democrats overperformed in the first round back in June.
Should still be a GOP hold though.
Interesting special election coming up in CA's #AD63 on Aug. 26.
District was Trump+13 in 2024 but only Trump+6 in 2020. This actually makes it one of the most competitive GOP-held seats to host a special this year.
GOP candidates won 55-44 in first round, but the Dem has a lot of labor support.

Ok, ok. I've updated my various databases to push off the #AD63 special election to the August run-off date.
Don't worry; the fun facts that I had worked out will still be zesty and fresh when that late August rolls around.
California #AD63 (Trump+13) special election results:
Chris Shoults (D)- 44.6%
Natasha Johnson (R)- 44.1%
Vincent Romo (R)- 9.8%
Zach Consalvo (Libertarian)- 1.5%
No candidate broke 50%, so this is going to an August runoff between Shoults and Johnson
So, based on what we've seen in recent Assembly special elections, we're looking at a likely >95% absentee ballot turnout in today's #AD63 special election (meaning that we'll have a really good idea what happened before Sacramento sunset at about 8:36 pm).
