A simple fix for that, would be allow more houses be built, using either Residential Small lot zoning #RSLZ (cottage housing), or #accessorydwelling #ADU4you. I know I have more than enough property to put another house on it without hurting my lifestyle or my neighbors.
Next cottage design: notice how parking requirement forces double expense (building parking area+cantilevered construction) if we want to save existing tree. #adu4you #backyardcottage #accessorydwellings
An investment in DADUs is a powerful disincentive to future tear downs and the greater environmental, visual and noise impact of out of scale McMansions. #ADU4you
BTW 58% of ALL Portland dwellings are owner occupied, so whether there’s and ADU on site doesn’t change ownership mix! #ADU4you
Cities like portland don’t have owner occupancy restrictions yet 64%! of ADU properties still have owners on site. Fears of absentee landlords are no more real than for detached house zones. #ADU4you
They are a perfect size for our smaller households (2.1 people according to the latest demographics) and are relatively more affordable. #ADU4you
Many older Seattleites who want to age in place see backyard cottages as way finance their retirements, or facilitate multi-generational living arrangements, or downsize while maintaining neighborhood connections. #ADU4you
Why Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are a great fit for our n’hoods & our housing needs:
They begin to undo past inequities by opening up our city’s great parks, schools & assets to people that could never afford to rent/buy a big single family detached home.

Tomorrow I'll be discussing Residential Small Lot Zoning (RSL) with @MBAKS at Blue Star Café at breakfast, #ADU4you with @MOARSeattle at Queen Anne CC.
Next week it's a #RSLZ talk Monday night, AIA Housing Task Force then update on Backyard Cottages for @UpZonesPodcast Thursday
Polling, as of this morning, is still 10 to 1 in favor of accessory dwelling reform. #ADU4you @SeattleCouncil @CMMikeOBrien
Enjoy our latest #adu4you
Let’s get ADU reform done so more people can enjoy these awesome little cottages! @mikejobrien @SeattleOPCD @AIASeattle @NicolasWelch @SeattleCouncil @danbertolet @KUOW @DBeekman @sarahannelloyd
Here’s two cottages across the alley from one another. Both labors of love, designed to specific budget, program and aesthetic goals. Both are oriented to respect neighbors, main house privacy, preserve yards and trees.
Both are perfect places to live. #adu4you #moarhousing
In light of Kaplan’s crusade against renters in his #ADU appeal, how the presence of rentals will ‘destroy’ the neighborhood, here is a map showing majority of Queen Anne has at least 40% renter households (pink to greens in image). @ericacbarnett @KUOW #ADU4you @qacc
Turns out ADU antagonist can’t even find a single example of an egregious accessory dwelling. If he’s against Tall Skinnies, good news: the new ordinance doesn’t allow them either.
#ADU4you #ADUEIS @SeattleOPCD @SeattleCouncil @CMTMosqueda
Limiting the size of new houses is un-American and absolutely essential.
Seattle is following Portland's lead and studying limiting newly developed house sizes to a percentage of the lot's size. #ADU4you
3/3 A tree sequesters 48 lbs of carbon/yr-about the equivalent of driving just 53 miles in avg car (Arbor Day Fdn/EPA). So as much as I hate when we cut down a tree to fit a backyard cottage, the net benefit is there. Then come back and we plant some more trees! #ADU4you #trees
2/3 I don't sympathize w/ people who complain about trees coming down in the city and simultaneously ignore the reality of necessary housing having to go elsewhere where the impacts are a thousand times worse for the environment. #ADU4you #trees
1/3 When we support building new backyard cottages in the city, we are both saving the trees on some virgin parcel of land elsewhere and most of transportation related carbon emissions to get the person who might live out there to the store, school, work. #ADU4you #trees
Before disparaging renters, remember
Every other person on the street
every other kid at school
Every other family at the market
Every other Seattleite you meet
Is a renter, and loves the city, the n'hood just the same
#ADU4you
It's a total fiction that allowing some house-sized buildings w/3 renter households, kaplan's worst nightmare-the triplex, will have any seismic negative impact. Maybe the needle movestoward a higher % of renters in an already mixed n'hood #ADU4you
#qacc
@Andrew_Koved Kaplan sez eliminating owner occ restriction would change n'hood (w/ insinuation that influx of renters would harm), but look @ renter density: Most of QA is at least 40% renter.
The n'hood's character that ADU critics eulogize is a MIX of renter/owner #ADU4you
In light of the ADU EIS being published today, I wanted to highlight some of the less obvious reasons accessory dwellings should be a critical part our housing future in Seattle #ADU4you #moarhomes #homesuitehome...
In the last decade, homes that everyday people with average incomes could afford have nearly disappeared, from 70% of homes on the market to just 12% even though our average income is one of the highest in the nation. Will no one be able to find a house to buy? #ADU4you
Seattle's appetite for ADUs is growing, but it will take legislation like this, and leadership from @SeattleCouncil to fully realize the great potential of #moarhomes Be sure to tell Council you'd like an #ADU4you !
There are many reasons Seattle should embrace #ADU4you Here are 5 of the less obvious but really important ones! medium.com/@matthutchinsaia/good-ne...
Its time for #ADU4you #homesuitehome
