Pendulous pink flower structure (called a dangling raceme) of flowering currant. Before the flowers open, the raceme looks like a tight bunch of miniature grapes, but elongates and becomes less crowded as the individual florets bloom. In this example, the flowers at the top are open, and those at the tip are in bud. The leaf to the left has a thick, coarse texture, with deep-set veins, a bit like a raspberry leaf.

Kicking off the new month with a pretty star-like saxifrage at the garden centre.

Yellow winter aconite flowers against their rosettes of green foliage growing amongst the bark-and leaf fall of a banked roadside verge. In the background to the right are two tree trunks, and to the left, the simple stone memorial to the Roachburn Pit flooding. Memorial consists of a stone base, two side supports, and a triangular stone top. On the triangular stone is a metal plaque giving details of the three men lost.

By the memorial to the three men lost in the Roachburn Pit flooding on 28th January 1908. I love that this verge is planted with something that is in flower on the anniversary.

An open pink cyclamen flower seen from above so you look down on the rear of the twisted, reflexed petals and see where they are held by the crimson calyx and sepals almost like the metal clasp that holds the top of a glass Christmas tree bauble. To the right at a diagonal is the withered stem of one of last summer's perennials.

Tiny white florets of Viburnum Tinus, which has a branching flower structure with inflorescences involving multiple tiny florets. Each floret has five filaments tipped by pollen-bearing anthers. The overall effect reminds me of cartoons of alien eyes on stalks.

A day of dealing with aftermath... at my late mother's house, getting it ready to hand over to its next owners. It's higher up the fell, and today was a bleak cold day. But loving the warm auburn colours of last year's false goat's beard (Astilbe) in the border.

A pair of pale mauve viola flowers, back to back. On the foremost flower, the deeper centre with dark flight lines that guide pollinators to the centre of the flower are visible. The rear flower is seen from the back: the green sepals that formed the bud have peeled back to form a perfect five-point star shape holding the petals.
