That's it for today! Come with me next time searching for diamonds in the rough #AFPilotSeason
Fun ending to the Oakbridge pilot but sadly another I wouldn't listen to more of - too many characters and too many threads, this one could really use a bit of focusing down for audio #AFPilotSeason
Honestly Oakbridge is a show that feels a whole lot like it wants to be an American teen drama TV show. It's not bad, perse, but it's not as well suited to the audio medium as it could be. I can hear the cues of the TV show it wants to be #AFPilotSeason
Performances and sound design are good in this show, but it's a good example of why you need to be cautious about introducing too many voices too fast. We meet about 10 different characters briefly in the first five minutes, and it's hard to track who we should care about and why #AFPilotSeason
Aaaand now Oakbridge! I always appreciate a show that takes a moment of environmental sound as an 'establishing shot' before the first line of dialogue #AFPilotSeason
This show is real cheesy, the writing is a bit abrasive from a social perspective - especially to women and working class people, and the performances are over-egged. If you want the audio drama equivalent of an airport paperback urban fantasy detective story, you'll like it #AFPilotSeason
Ok, next up! The 100 Handed. I'm enjoying the deliberately pulpy tone here, and it's an ensemble cast drama with a little sound design which is nice. The actor playing Wexler is struggling to match their partner, but the difference isn't too noticeable #AFPilotSeason
Ah this is a shame - another relative monotone reading aloud essentially a short story. It's fine if you're looking for self published audiobooks, but not quite my area of interest #AFPilotSeason
I'm not quite as sold on the follow up monologue. Again, folk seem to think monologues are places where you get to shortcut acting, in reality I find they're the least forgiving of inexperienced performance #AFPilotSeason
I love a cold open on a confident audio montage, it immediately gives me hope that the sound design is going to be interesting #AFPilotSeason
I love the ambition of Happy Medium. I probably won't listen to more, but it's sweet and it's got a lot of heart. Next up: Half a Million Reasons #AFPilotSeason
The person playing a dead drag queen is delightful. I suspect that the role of Helen would be served better by a more experienced actor. As always, heavy monologue and narration in drama is served best by a confident performer #AFPilotSeason
This said, the writing is fun! I always love a reveal in an audio drama when a character and the listener knows something / someone is there, but then we learn that that something / someone is invisible to everyone else #AFPilotSeason
Ok so let's start with Happy Medium! The performances are ok, but pretty inexperienced. The sound design is also struggling a little: we've got incidental sounds but we're lacking a soundscape that gives context and continuity #AFPilotSeason
Hey friends, it's time for another Audio Fiction Pilot Season! You know the drill: my honest opinions on whether I'd listen to more of a show #AFPilotSeason
Ok, I probably won't listen to more of the Fleet, though I'd definitely like to see if the actor who plays Maura shows up anywhere else. That's all for now! More on Monday #AFPilotSeason
Yeah, this is a good example of a somewhat lopsided cast. One of the two performers, playing Maura, is brilliant and bringing a lot of interest to the script. But sadly the other, playing Simon, is not nearly as experienced and is sadly undermining that interest #AFPilotSeason
Ooh this new character / actor about 20 minutes in is immediately much more interesting, and clearly performing. I'm intrigued again! #AFPilotSeason
This is a good example of a pilot that could have used a little more editing. Whilst I think Soulbound and The Fleet are roughly equivalent in terms of cast and writer experience, Soulbound is much easier to listen to because it's quick and economic with its plot #AFPilotSeason
This is another show that's very sweet and charming in its ambition but loses a little in relatively inexperienced performers. Lines sound very "read", like a person is reading a script aloud rather than feeling or understanding the intention of what they're saying and why #AFPilotSeason
Audio levels are definitely running low on this one, I've needed to turn up my volume almost to the max to hear in my quiet flat, let alone outside. Always check your levels on shitty earbuds on a high street! If your show can't be heard, it needs a little bumping up #AFPilotSeason
Next in the queue, The Fleet! I'm immediately a little worried about the fact the hosts are quite quiet in their introduction, but fingers crossed! #AFPilotSeason
It's not clear enough to me within the fictional science of the world why our protagonist isn't convinced by his interviewee's sentience. But again, this is a sweet show doing it's best. I probably won't listen to more but I'm glad it exists #AFPilotSeason
Little mistakes - like the interviewer referring to a robot talking about their potential destruction for a small mistake inspiring their consciousness as being 'mad at their job' undermine the narrative a little #AFPilotSeason
So I like Soulbound - I think the robot being interviewed in the pilot is doing a great job. The writing and performance are fairly inexperienced but clearly ambitious. #AFPilotSeason
Next show, Soulbound! Immediately I've got two voices, which makes me happy. This reminds me of smaller shows in twenty-teens which I find very charming. Everyone here is clearly putting their heart into it #AFPilotSeason
Ok so that took a while. Tether is ok. The narrator is not an actor and mostly speaks in a deadpan. I'm glad the person making it is having fun, I wouldn't listen to more #AFPilotSeason
The writing is solidly ok, it's a little clear the writer either hasn't listened to much audio drama or has primarily listened to one genre of podcast (true crime and conspiracy). It means their phrases and cadence feel repetitive and unoriginal #AFPilotSeason
Next up, Tethers. This throws me right back to the early twenty-teens. It reminds me of Return Home, though sadly it feels a little derivative, and the lead performance isn't quite compelling enough for me to carry the monologue #AFPilotSeason
I'm really intrigued! Whilst I generally prefer ensemble cast drama, Gospel of Haven is interesting enough that I'd like to try and listen to more #AFPilotSeason
