She actually has shown remorse. I've been down a terrorism rabbit hole in the past year and a half and have read a lot about her and people like her. She has changed her tune in the years since her surrender, and in particular since she got moved to a safer detention camp, Al-Roj. Her previous camp, Al-Hol, was crawling with ISIS women who would physically attack you if you criticized ISIS. Shamima said her previous statements about having no regrets, etc., were made only because she was afraid of the fanatics at Al-Hol. For what it's worth, in the BBC podcast "I'm Not a Monster", Shamima claimed she had no idea that the Islamic State was a terrorist organization and said she thought it was just a literal Islamic state, and that it was her duty as a Muslim to join it. She claims she was misled by her friend Sharmeena Begum (no blood relation) who joined ISIS and then convinced her three friends in the Bethnal Green Trio to join too. Shamima said Sharmeena told them it was wonderful there and that any reports of atrocities (such as the time ISIS set a captured Jordanian pilot in fire) were fake news. Shamima said she directly asked Sharmeena about the Jordanian pilot and was told the man had crashed his plane and that ISIS had tried to save his life by dragging him from the burning wreckage and that the fake news had lied about this. Shamima said she believed her because Sharmeena was her friend and was actually living in ISIS territory. She said she never saw an ISIS propaganda video herself until she was already in their territory. It's up to you, whether to believe all that or not. I am not sure about Shamima, but Sharmeena appears to be irredeemable. Sharmeena escaped the detention camp, went into hiding and commenced to raising money for ISIS online. She was still doing this as late as 2023!
This comment caused Reddit’s automod to delete it and send me a message asking if I was suicidal and giving hotline numbers. No matter how many times I tried re-wording the comment, #Reddit automod persisted in seeing it as a suicide threat. #AIContentModeration 🙄
