Since the last election, Labor has moved sharply to the right, most obviously with Albanese’s enthusiastic (if unrewarded) backing for Trump’s war on Iran, but also with capitulation to the gambling lobby, gratuitous attacks on Grace Tame and general rightwing dog whistles. It’s time for the Greens to make an open break with Labor. The obvious point for this break is with respect to the US. Rather than merely criticising particular actions (AUKUS, the Iran war) what is needed is an explicit recognition that the US is no longer an ally, and that this is unlikely to change even after Trump’s presidency ends (which may be a long way off). The simplest way to express this is to withdraw, not only from AUKUS but from ANZUS. That puts the Greens in opposition to the uniparty (Labor, Liberal and One Nation) policy of sucking up to Trump, on an issue where a large but unmobilised part of the population would agree with them. Of course, this would be hugely controversial. But Hanson didn’t eat half of the Liberal party vote by being diplomatic. The Greens need to get the attention of mass media that have so far ignored them completely. That’s the first step towards challenging Labor’s undeserved hold on the votes of centre-left Australiams.
